Chiton articulatus, a mollusk endemic to the Mexican Pacific, is a species whose ecological associations with the algae that colonize it are not well known. This work describes the epibionts observed on the shells of this species. We collected chitons in the rocky intertidal of 2 localities in the state of Guerrero, Mexico. Sixty-two chitons were collected that had 50 species of algae. The best represented family was Cladophoraceae with 10 species. Of the total number of specimens, 26 had epibionts whose distribution on the shell was different: 11 species on the valves, 17 on the suture, 1 on the belt, and 22 species shared in the first 2 zones. Five morphofunctional groups of algae were recognized: microscopic, filamentous, crustose, foliose and corticated filaments, with a predominance of filaments. A relationship was found between the size of the chitons and the percentage of algal cover. Studies like the present one are important due to the interaction between both organisms, since chitons offer surfaces of easy colonization for algae. Furthermore, records of species that do not commonly appear in floristic inventories can be found on these.
Marine epiphyte studies in Mexico, including macroalgae, are lacking in the published literature. Floristic studies have been mainly focused on identifying the algae growing on rocky substrata, and epiphytic algae have been recorded, but only occasionally. The aim of this work is to establish the current state of knowledge of the epiphytic macroalgae and their hosts on the Mexican coasts. A systematic revision of the literature published from 1950 to 2021 is also reported, the literature information is included, and the composition, species richness, current state of knowledge of the epiphytic marine macroalgae, and their relationship with the various marine Mexican ecoregions are reported. Sixty-one publications since 1950 included at least one record of epiphytic macroalgae. In this study, 615 species of epiphytic macroalgae and 224 species of hosts for Mexico are reported. This checklist will provide a baseline for future taxonomic and biogeographic studies of the epiphytic marine algae in the country.

The distributional patterns of the species of the mollusc subclass Vetigastropoda were analysed using the panbiogeographical method of track analysis. We analysed distributional data of 434 species and 72 genera of the world obtained from specialized literature and records in 12 malacological collections. We constructed the individual tracks for the species analysed and superimposed them, applying a parsimony analysis of endemicity with progressive character elimination. We identified 26 generalized tracks, extending in the Pacific Ocean (14), Indian Ocean (six), Atlantic Ocean (four), Mediterranean Sea (one) and Atlantic–Pacific Oceans (one). The generalized tracks show the complex relationships of the mollusc biota, representing geographical and phylogenetic boundaries of taxa with diverse geographical affinities. Five panbiogeographical nodes were identified by the intersection of two or more generalized tracks. Our analysis offers an approximation for understanding the distributional patterns of vetigastropod species worldwide from the perspective of evolutionary or historical biogeography. The results obtained for the Vetigastropoda coincide completely or in part with those previously presented for other taxa. The generalized tracks support hypotheses of primary biogeographical homology that might be corroborated by evidence from other different, phylogenetically unrelated taxa.
