RESUMO As partes aéreas dessecadas de Senecio brasiliensis, colhidas no período de brotação, foram administradas a 14 equinos de raça mista, com idade de 4 a 22 anos e pesando de 230 a 475kg. A planta era misturada à ração dada aos animais ou moída, misturada em água e administrada por sonda nasogástrica. Colheitas de sangue foram realizadas periodicamente em 14 equinos para avaliação da atividade enzimâtica sérica. Oito cavalos morreram em consequência da intoxicação. Três cavalos morreram por outras causas. Três cavalos sobreviveram sem apresentar quaisquer sinais clínicos durante o período em que foram observados. Nos oito equinos intoxicados, os sinais clínicos tiveram evolução de um a seis dias e caracterizaram-se por anorexia, icterícia e distúrbios neurológicos. Conclui-se que entre as provas laboratoriais usadas a gama-glutamiltransferase e aspartato-aminotransferase apresentaram significado prático melhor na avaliação da função hepática, pois a atividade sérica dessas enzimas estiveram elevadas em todos os equinos que desenvolveram a intoxicação por Senecio brasilieneis.

Foram realizadas colheitas de sangue periodicamente nos 14 equinos para avaliação dos níveis séricos de bilirrubina, albumina e proteína. Oito cavalos desenvolveram a intoxicação, três morreram por causas outras e três sobreviveram sem apresentar quaisquer sinais clínicos durante o período em que foram observados. Nos animais que desenvolveram a doença os sinais clínicos tiveram evolução de um a seis dias e caracterizaram-se por anorexia, icterícia e distúrbios neurológicos. A bilirrubina total e indireta apresentam-se elevadas na fase terminal da intoxicação e a albumina e proteína mostram níveis abaixo dos valores de referência num equino que desenvolveu a forma crônica da enfermidade. Conclui-se que dentre as provas laboratoriais usadas, a bilirrubina indireta apresenta melhor indicação da alteração hepática causada por intoxicação pelo senecio brasiliensis.
RESUMO A influência do sangue venoso na determinação do anion gap foi estudada em 50 equinos adultos clinicamente sadios no município de Santa Maria, RS. Os resultados obtidos em mEq/1 foram: sódio 140 ± 2,0; potássio 4,2 ± 0,5; cloreto 102 ± 12 e bicarbonato 26,9 ± 2,0. Conclui-se que o sangue venoso pode substituir o arterial na determinação do anion gap em equinos.
Foram utilizados 20 cães machos, sem raça definida, divididos em dois grupos de 10 para análise da variação circadiana dos leucócitos, fibrinogênio e plaquetas. Todos os cães foram submetidos a um processo inflamatório subcutâneo induzido pela administração de Terebentina. Após 24 horas os animais do grupo 1 foram tratados com duas doses de 1,3mg/kg de escina com intervalos de 12 horas e os cães do grupo II mantidos como testemunha. Coletas de sangue foram feitas em todos os animais às 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 e 24 horas do dia para determinação dos leucócitos, fibrinogênio e plaquetas. A escina determinou nos animais do grupo I monocitose às 0, 8, 12, 16 e 24 horas, linfopenia às 12, 16 e 24 horas, leucocitose às 0, 20 e 24 horas, aumento da taxa de fibrinogênio às 16 e 24 horas e uma diminuição das plaquetas durante todo o dia. Conclui-se que a escina determina variações circadiana instáveis do número de leucócitos, plaquetas e quantidade de fibrinogênio em cães com processo inflamatório.
Para analisar a variação circadiana dos leucócitos, fibrinogênio e plaquetas, foram utilizados 20 cães machos, sem raça definida, os quais foram divididos em dois grupos de 10 animais. Os cães do grupo I foram tratados com 1,3mg/kg de escina de 12 em 12 horas e os do grupo II sem nenhum tratamento. Goletas de sangue foram feitas em todos os animais às 0 (zero), 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 e 24h do dia para exame dos leucócitos, fibrinogênio e plaquetas. A escina determinou eosinopenia às 8 e 12 horas, monocitopenia às 24h e linfocitose em relação aos animais sadios às 8, 16 e 20h. Na taxa de fibrinogênio houve aumento às 20 e 24h e nas plaquetas diminuição às 0 (zero), 8, 12, 16 e 20h. Pode-se concluir que a escina determina variações circadianas instáveis do número de alguns tipos de leucócitos, plaquetas e quantidade de fibrinogênio em cães sadios.
