Chamam a atenção, nos dias que correm, as discussões entre devedores e credores com relação ao valor efetivo das dívidas contraídas entre eles. Este artigo busca trazer esse assunto para discussão e contribuir, dessa maneira, para evitar que muitas pessoas e instituições, por desconhecimento de causa, paguem por suas dívidas valores maiores do que aqueles considerados justos. A idéia desta contribuição nasceu da grande quantidade de laudos de conferência de cálculos (nas esferas administrativa e judicial) que a EAESP/FGV tem fornecido para dí-vidas bancárias, precatórios e outros processos congêneres.Tal fato ocorre porque os processos de cálculo são complexos e muitas vezes os contratos, que dão origem a tais relações creditícias, são ainda mais intrincados que os pró-prios processos de cálculo, muitas vezes utilizando diversos índices de correção e taxas de juros que têm diversificadas metodologias para incidência e lançamento às contas. Em função dos métodos matemáti-cos especialíssimos freqüentemen-te utilizados (o método hamburguês de cálculo de remuneração de capital, por exemplo, é até hoje desconhecido pela maioria dos mutuári-os), nenhuma dívida deve ser paga sem que seu valor seja conferido de maneira técnica, tanto do ponto de vista matemático-financeiro quanto do jurídico.
