Abstract-Complementary Therapy is medication which uses method, equipment, or ingredients which are not included in modern therapy standard (conventional); it is used complementary therapy. The use of complementary therapy by people throughout the world (including Indonesia) is increasing each year. In coping with ISPA (Upper Respiratory Tract Infection), especially which attack the upper respiratory tract such as cough, fever, flu, people usually choose alternative therapies besides conventional therapy. The objective of the research was to find out complementary therapy in handling ISPA in families that had balita (below five year-old children) at Beganding Village, Karo Regency which included the percentage of using therapy, its method, and the reason for a family in using complementary therapy. The research used descriptive design. The samples were 32 respondents, the result of the research showed that 28 respondents used complementary therapy in coping with ISPA in their children. Of the 4 types of complementary therapy touching therapy was more commonly used than the other three types of complementary therapy individually of in combination. It is recommended thet the next researchers use qualitative design to analyze deeply the use of complementary therapy in coping with ISPA in society.
Street children are the children who spend most of their time to earn for money or work at the streets and other public places. Consequently, the street children’s eating habit is not regular and it will lead to irregular food consumption pattern. Eating pattern influences one’s nutritional status. The objective of this research was to discover the correlation between food consumption pattern and nutritional status among street children in Shelter Home, Medan Maimun Sub-district. This is a quantitative research with descriptive correlational approach. The population was all street children in the shelter home, Medan Maimun Sub-district i.e. 51 children. The results of the research demonstrated that there was a positive and significant correlation between food consumption pattern and nutritional status of street children in the shelter home, Medan. Street children in shelter home, Medan mostly have poor food consumption patterns and very poor nutritional status categories. Therefore, it is expected that No-governmental Organizations such as KOPA provide socializations or counselling to the families of the street children about food consumption patterns and nutritional status so that they will have understanding of nutritious food and healthy eating pattern.
Old age is someone who has reached more than 60 years of age and has limitations in making a living to meet their daily needs. Elderly are individuals who have experienced an aging process and decreased endurance making it vulnerable to disease. Problems that often occur in the elderly are malnutrition and infection. Elderly who cannot meet their daily needs independently tend to experience underweight. Besides being influenced by knowledge, habits are also very important in shaping the health of the elderly. The purpose of this study was to identify the knowledge and nutritional status of the elderly in the Medan City area. The research design used is descriptive with a total of 30 elderly respondents. Data collection is done by interviewing respondents one by one. The results of the study found that the majority of the elderly have less knowledge about nutrition and the majority of the nutritional status of the elderly is in the poor category. Researchers advise the community, especially the elderly, to be active in activities held by local health workers to gain and improve knowledge, especially those related to the nutritional needs of the elderly.
