Zusammenfassung: In diesem Beitrag wird versucht, Konstruktionsprinzipien und Bewegungsmuster der Weltwirtschaft des Erdöls theoriegeleitet und auf historisch-empirischer Grundlage in Form von Hypothesen zu formulieren. Unter Weltwirtschaft des Erdöls wird die um Förderung, Verarbeitung, Verteilung und Verbrauch von Erdöl herum gruppierte, variable Konfiguration von Nationalstaaten, multinationalen Konzernen und Weltmarktbeziehungen sowie der OPEC als internationale Organisation verstanden. Die Argumentationsfigur besteht aus einer Kette von vier miteinander verknüpften und teilweise einander überlagernden Funktionsprozessen: 1. Kapitalismus als profitorientierte, innovative und expansive Wirtschaftsweise; 2. Inkorporation externer Erdölvorkommen durch Regierungen und Unternehmen der Zentrumsländer als Konsequenz des Kapitalismus; 3. als Reaktion auf die Übermacht internationaler Konzerne: der Aufbau von Gegenmacht auf Seiten der exportierenden Peripherieländer zur Aneignung der Ölvorkommen und Veränderung der asymmetrischen Austauschbeziehungen und 4. Umstellungen des weltwirtschaftlichen Integrationsmodus nach schweren wirtschaftlichen und politischen Krisen auf der Basis eines Interessenausgleichs zwischen Zentrum und Peripherie. Die Analyse wird mit einem einfachen Funktionszyklus-Modell der kapitalistischen Weltwirtschaft abgeschlossen. In diesem Beitrag wird Erdöl als eine knappe, für die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung vieler Länder nach wie vor relevante und darum international umkämpfte Ressource betrachtet, um deren Kontrolle und Verwertung sich ein interdependentes Gefüge von Staaten, Unternehmen, Märkten und Organisationen entwickelt hat, das man die Weltwirtschaft des Erdöls nennen kann. Sie umfasst die um die Förderung, Verarbeitung, Verteilung und Verbrauch von Erdöl herum gruppierte Konfiguration von Öl exportierenden (Entwicklungs-)Ländern und industrialisierten Verbrauchsländern, multinationalen Mineralölkonzernen, die die internationalen Austauschbeziehungen im Spektrum von Markt und Hierarchie organisieren, sowie die OPEC als Kartell Öl exportierender Staaten und Gegenmacht zu den Ölkonzernen der Industrieländer. Nicht nur wegen ihrer wirtschaftlichen Relevanz als weltweit wichtigster Energieträger und als neben Automobilen wertmäßig führende Gütergruppe im Welthandel (UNCTAD 2000: 159), sondern auch auf Grund ihrer Vergesellschaftungsformen ist die Weltwirtschaft des Erdöls von soziologischem Interesse.
