Abstract: Ruderal plants are synanthropic species that grow in disturbed places associated with human settlements. Very little information is available on this group of plants in Mexico. This work presents a fl oristic list of the ruderal plants of the Malinalco, Mexico State, urban area. This is a region located in the ecotone between temperate and tropical climates, and has a long history of human habitation. In addition, we analyzed the biogeographical composition and life forms. Between May 2008 and April 2009, the town was surveyed systematically and monthly, collecting vascular plants in vacant lots, walls and sidewalks of Malinalco. Data on the origin and distribution of the species were obtained from the literature. We calculated the estimated richness in order to verify the suffi ciency of the collection effort, the fl oristic richness per area unit (species) and the fl oristic similarity (genera) between Malinalco and Mexico City. Malinalco was richer in ruderal species than Mexico City, considering the differences in size; the two cities shared over 60 % of the genera. The dominant life form was perennial herbs. Natives represented 73.6 % of the species, but very few (less than 9 %) were endemics to Mexico; 59.3 % had a wide distrib...
A new species of Marsdenia (Apocynaceae; Asclepiadoideae) from montane cloud forest in the state of Guerrero, Mexico, is described and illustrated. Marsdenia microcarpa is distinguished from congeners by a gynostegial corona with lobes oblong-ovate, adnate to the gynostegium, apices obtuse, free, erect or divergent, lobe margins connate at base, a corpuscle with rostrate apex, and follicles narrowly fusiform, less than 5 cm long at maturity. A key to the species of Marsdenia in the state of Guerrero is presented.
In this study, we update the systematics of the Tabernaemontana and describe the general patterns of species diversity and conservation status in Mexico. A total of 18 species were registered, including one cultivated species, two new species described here (T. chamelensis L.O. Alvarado & Lozada-Pérez and T. ochoterenae L.O. Alvarado & S. Islas), and eight species endemic to Mexico, which in total represents 47% of the diversity of the genus in the country. The states of Chiapas, Oaxaca, and Veracruz had the highest species diversity in native and endemic species. A map based on the kriging approach and the sums of species distribution models corroborate the sites of high diversity. A comparison among American countries showed that Central American countries share more specific similarity than South American ones. A risk evaluation showed that six species are under threat, mainly the endemic species. This exercise demonstrated that this genus is an interesting model to understand the biogeography, evolution, and affinities of the tropical flora of the Americas. Our work provides a basis for a deeper study of the biogeography and biology of the members of genus Tabernaemontana.
It is herein presented Ruehssia sumiderensis as a new species known only in the Cañón del Sumidero National Park, in Chiapas, Mexico. It is illustrated with a line drawing, live images and SEM photographs of the gynostegium and pollinarium. Morphological and molecular evidence with plastid data (trnL intron and trnL-F intergenic spacer) confirms its position in Ruehssia, a recently proposed genus that includes American Marsdenieae species. It is similar to Marsdenia laxiflora and M. pinetorum due to the basally rounded or truncate leaves, rotate corolla without callous cushions in the sinuses. Two new combinations are also made in Ruehssia, for M. laxiflora and M. pinetorum.
