Summary.-Current methods used in the study and interpretation of archaeological charcoal fragments are not sufficlently rigorous to reconstruct the palaeocology of past vegetation accurately. A rigorous sampling method, excluding fireplaoes, and a statlstical analysis of charcoal fragmentation are developed here. The problem of mass reduction is not yet resolved. On this basis, the hypothesis of palaeocological representativity of charcoalls disputable. New principles of palaeoecological interpretation are proposed.
Lucie Chabal.
