Analysis of the goals scored in the 2008 Brazilian Championship ---A SeriesAbstract This study aims to quantify and analyze the occurrence of assists, shots, and locations where the ball entered the goal, in order to compare the prevalence of variables among home and visitor teams. The sample consisted of 1,035 goals scored in 380 games in the Brazilian Championship 2008. The main assistance locations of moving balls leading to goals were: from outside the area to the center and from outside the area at the left wing. The main locations for shots were the penalty area and outside the area to the center. Most balls entered the goal at the lower part of the crossbars. It is concluded that there was a low number of goals from outside the area, which shows the use of this resource is lacking when it comes to scoring the goal.
