This piece of writing describes, through a literature review, the state of the art in accessibility of digital contents by visually impaired people. This text also emphasizes the importance of access to information in the so called Information Society, as well as the role of communication and information technologies for the promotion of this access. This work stresses the importance of promoting visually impaired people´s access to information due to the fact that it is a basic citizenship right and a basic form of social participation. Therefore, it highlights the contribution of information and communication technologies that, through special procedures, have the possibility of promoting accessibility for all. The compliance with accessibility principles in the digital environment may aloud information and communication technologies to give a real contribution to the promotion of citizenship and social inclusion despite any limitations.
