The objective of this work was to characterize the commercial quantitative standards of floral stems of gladiolus plants grown under minimum tillage and conventional systems in two harvest seasons in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Experiments were conducted in locations with subtropical climate using soils classified as Typic Dystrudept (Cambissolo) and Typic Hapludox (Nitossolo). Gladiolus plants were grown in beds with intensive soil turning, and under minimum tillage system, in which soil turning was done only in the planting rows. Plants of the cultivars Red Beauty and White Goddess were evaluated in two harvest seasons, Mothers' Day, and Valentine's Day. A completely randomized experimental design with 12 replications was used; the treatments consisted of two harvest seasons and two soil management systems. The flower stem and inflorescence lengths, stem thickness, and number of florets were measured when the plants were at the harvest point to characterize their commercial quantitative standards. These data were used to distribute the stems into four classes (75, 90, 110 and non-marketable). The stem standard of gladiolus plants grown under minimum tillage system and the edaphoclimatic conditions of the state of Santa Catarina in the Mother's Day harvest met the flower market requirements, with most stems classified into the classes 90 and 110. Therefore, gladiolus plants can be grown under minimum tillage system without affecting the flower stem development. This work is the first step to promote the growth of flowers under a conservationist perspective, focused on a more sustainable agriculture.
The aim of this study is linking precipitation, air temperature and photoperiod conditions to the development of linseed, characterizing productivity and phenology in different agroecosystems in southern Brazil. The experiments were carried out in Curitibanos, Rio do Sul, Palmitos and Herval D 'Oeste in Santa Catarina state and Ronda Alta in Rio Grande do Sul state. The linseed sowing was carried out manually in the no-tillage system in three different seasons: April, May and June. Meteorological data of precipitation and air temperature, phenological stages and productivity of linseed plants were evaluated throughout the crop cycle. The thermal requirement of the linseed was calculated, using the thermal accumulation from the emergency to the harvest, as well as for each phase. The chill hours data were accumulated using temperatures between 2°C and 10°C. The photoperiod was calculated taking with latitude and solar declination data. It was possible to verify that the accumulated volume of precipitation was higher in the first growing season and lower in the third, due to the longest cycle length April. The air temperature varied from-3.8°C to 35.8°C. The amount of effective cold accumulated until flowering varied between 990 hours to 317 hours. The analysis carried out in the experiments does not show the relationship between accumulated cold hours and the duration of the development phases of linseed. The longest cycle was recorded in Rio do Sul (2,262.57 °C day) in April for the cultivars Aguará and Caburé and the smallest in Ronda Alta (1,707.2 °C day) in May for the Brown and Gold genotypes. The highest yields occurred in May in Curitibanos and Ronda Alta due to the better meteorological conditions.
This work aims to developing an Agricultural Climate Risk Zoning for gladiolus in the State of Santa Catarina. The bioclimatic requirements and the risk criteria were defined for the crop through a bibliographic review. The probability of frost occurrence, water balance and frequency of maximum air temperatures above 34°C were calculated with meteorological database. A maximum assumed risk of 20% was considered. The period when planting is not recommended was determined for each of the development cycles (early, intermediate I and II and late). It was observed that low temperatures and occurrence of frost in autumn and winter limits gladiolus planting in the State of Santa Catarina. Analysis of the water balance indicated there is risk of water deficiency throughout the year, which varies according to the locations. Maximum air temperatures above 34ºC do not occur frequently in the State. In the Coastal regions, there are no restrictions to planting throughout the year. The Agricultural Climate Risk Zoning indicate the potential for gladiolus farming in Santa Catarina, where the greatest planting potential is in the Coastal, West and Extreme West regions.
