AB STRACT:The re sults of ex per i men tal stud ies on the zygomatic arch dur ing the growth pe riod, through ex ci sions or fractures, are con tro ver sial. In this study, the ef fect of a dis con ti nu ity of the zygomatic arch on fa cial growth was ex per i mentally eval u ated, with out tissual dam age or de vi a tions. One-month-old rats were sub mit ted to a sur gi cal pro ce dure in or der to ob tain a one-milimeter-wide dis con ti nu ity of the right zygomatic arch. The left side served as a con trol. Af ter three months, the rats were sac ri ficed, their skull and hemimandibles were dissected, and ra dio graphs were ob tained. Cephalometric mea sure ments were car ried out in or der to as sess the di men sions of the infratemporal fossa, maxilla and man di ble, by means of a com puter sys tem. There was no sig nif i cant dif fer ence be tween the ex per i men tal and con trol sides as to the mea sure ments per tain ing to the maxilla and man di ble. Sig nif i cant dif fer ence was ob served in the anteroposterior length of the infratemporal fossa. It was con cluded that the con se quences of a dis con ti nu ity of the zygomatic arch on fa cial growth are re stricted to the struc ture it self. DESCRIPTORS: Zygoma; Fa cial bones, growth and de vel op ment; Rats.
