RESUMO -Este estudo descritivo-exploratório investiga as expectativas das puérperas e o co nhecimento que têm sobre cu idados com recém-nasci do, avaliando a influência da hospital ização na aquisição dessas info r mações. Através de entre v istas com 92 puérperas da ma ternidade de um hospita l-escola, em dois mo me ntos (internação e alta ), verificou-se que coto umbilica l, cu idados gerais, alimentação e higiene co rpora l constituem-se em assuntos de ma ior interesse d e sta clientela. A hospitalização contribuiu na aquisição de info rmação sobre aspectos técnicos do cuidado (cu rativo umbi lica l, banho, eructação e posição no leito após amamentação). As auto ras discutem sobre o papel educativo da enfermagem no atendimento das ne cessidades da clientela. ABSTRACTThis descriptive-explorato ry study investigates the ex pectations of the partu rients and the knowledge that they have over newbo rn ca re, evaluating the influence of the hospita lization in the acquisitio n of these info rmations. Through the interviews with 92 pa rtu rients from the ma ternity of a hospita l scholl, in two stages (internment and discharge) it has been ve rified that umbilica l butt, general ca re, food and corporal hygiene constitute subj ects of most interest of this clientele. The hospitalization has contributed for the acquisition of info rma tions about technical aspects of the ca re (umbilical dressi ng, bath, eructa tion and position of the baby on the cradle afte r breast-feeding). The au thors discuss about the educa tional role of the nursing in attending the ne cessities of the clientele.
