Considerado um dos principais fenômenos socioculturais do planeta, capaz de congregar nações de diferentes traços culturais e religiosos, o esporte de forma ampla, e os Jogos Olímpicos especificamente, reflete as marcas e transformações da sociedade ao longo do último século, espelhando as diferenças entre Estados, povos e classes. Parte do interesse despertado pelo público relaciona-se diretamente à figura do atleta. A construção da identidade do protagonista do espetáculo esportivo está associada diretamente ao movimento, à conquista, à visibilidade e a busca pela excelência. Superar barreiras é um desafio físico e emocional constante que conta ainda com o risco de lesões. Deixar de treinar e competir representa um afastamento da própria identidade, ou seja, o paciente atleta requer cuidados distintos de outros pacientes hospitalizados. O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar a singularidade do processo de internação e os modos de enfrentamento de atletas de nível olímpico hospitalizados. Para tanto serão utilizadas as narrativas biográficas de atletas de diferentes gerações olímpicas.
A dor é uma presença constante na vida de atletas profissionais. Resultado do uso do corpo em seu limite a dor deixa de ser um sinal de alerta para ser uma condição permanente indicando altos níveis de demanda física e emocional. A essa dor, denominada dor do treinamento, pouca importância é dada pelo atleta e comissão técnica. No entanto, quando se apresenta uma lesão que impede o exercício profissional manifesto em treinamento e competições, uma nova conduta deve ser adotada para o pronto restabelecimento. A dor da lesão demanda cuidados específicos da equipe de saúde que trabalha com o atleta para que a adesão ao processo de reabilitação ocorra de forma eficiente, respeitando as necessidades do atleta.
