BackgroundTo evaluate 91 cases of Stafne bone defect (SBD) in panoramic radiographs (PR) to determine the prevalence of different SBD variants, considering age, gender, and side. Additionally, to assess the most frequent imaging features of SBD.Material and MethodsParticipant data were collected from 91 SBD cases with PR imaging. First, SBDs were classified according to their location, as anterior, posterior, or ramus variant. SBD imaging features were classified according to radiographic imaging findings, assessing margins, degree of internal radiolucency, shape, topographic relationship between the defect and mandibular border, location of the defect according to mandibular teeth, and locularity. The topographic relationship between the SBD and the mandibular canal was described for the inferior variant only. Mean sizes were also described.ResultsA total of 92 SBD cases were evaluated from 91 radiographs. One case presented multiple defects. Mean patient age was 60.80 years. Men were more affected than women. The most frequent SBD variant was the posterior variant, and the least frequent was the ramus variant. The most observed radiographic features were thick sclerotic bone margin in the entire contour of the defect, partially radiolucent internal content, oval shape, continuity with mandible base without discontinuity of mandible border, third molar region location, and unilocular shape. With the posterior variant only, the most common topographic relationship between the defect and the upper wall of the mandibular canal was the defect located below the upper wall and continuous with the inferior wall of the mandibular canal.ConclusionsThe knowledge of common SBD radiographic imaging features in PR can help dental practitioners with the differential diagnosis of SBD. Objectives: Heterotopic bone formation within a muscle is designated as 'myositis ossificans', and it is associated with multiple aetiologies, such as trauma, genetic predisposition, post-infection, or undetermined causes. When the disease develops as a result of a trauma, the myositis ossificans is classified as 'myositis ossificans traumatica'. In this case report, a case of myositis ossificans traumatica is described, emphasizing its imaging features. Additionally, a literature review of the imaging features of myositis ossificans is discussed. Material and Methods: A 60-year old male patient presented with restricted mouth opening and pain during mastication. Multislice computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging examinations were conducted. Case reports in the literature of myositis ossificans were searched databases from August 1984 until April 2019 using the keyword 'masticatory muscles' combined with 'myositis'; 'inflammatory myositis'; infectious myositis'; 'inflammatory muscle diseases'; 'focal myositis' and 'proliferative myositis'. Data was summarised and evaluated according to a critical appraisal checklist for case reports. Results: Multislice computed tomography demonstrated an ectopic hyperdense area arising from the coronoid bone and within the temporal muscle. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated the same area with a hypointense signal. In the literature review, 53 myositis ossificans cases were identified, and 12 cases affecting the temporal muscle were found. Conclusions: The main imaging feature of myositis ossificans is the presence of a radiopaque, hyperdense or hypointense mass in the affected muscle, which is seen on multislice computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, respectively. The final diagnosis is through histopathological examination, although imaging can suggest the most likely diagnosis.

Bone density is higher in Brazilian Afro-descendant women than in Caucasians and Asians. Patient's age is associated with bone density and the MCI. The mandibular cortical index is inversely correlated with the peripheral densitometry results within the study ethnic population.

Within the limitations of this study, the present results suggest that Type 2 diabetes might increase BMD in postmenopausal females.

Mandibular bone depression, also known as Stafne bone cavity, is defined as a bone depression filled mainly with salivary gland tissue. Parotid gland bone defects are infrequently observed. We report the case of a 52-year-old male patient who underwent radiographic examinations due to temporomandibular joint dysfunction, and a radiolucent area was detected in the mandibular ramus, with a provisional diagnosis of traumatic bone cyst or parotid mandibular bone defect. The patient was then referred for magnetic resonance imaging, which demonstrated a hyperintense area eroding the mandibular ramus, which corresponded to glandular tissue. Although the defect was a benign lesion, radiolucencies in the mandibular ramus lead to concerns among professionals, because their radiographic features can resemble various intrabony neoplastic lesions, such as giant cell tumors or benign tumors of the parotid gland.

Objectives: This systematic literature review addressed the use of mandibular cortical index (MCI), assessed by panoramic radiography, for the identification of postmenopausal females at risk of osteoporosis. Methods: Databases were searched for original research studies published from September 2010 to September 2020 using the following keywords: “postmenopausal osteoporosis” and synonyms combined with “panoramic radiography” and synonyms. Only English language manuscripts and studies pertaining to the MCI were selected. Results: A total of 24 studies were included. The publications were highly heterogeneous in terms of the subject of interest, i.e., the MCI, with some studies comparing the usefulness of the MCI using panoramic radiography and using cone beam computed tomography, and others comparing different radiomorphometric indexes developed for panoramic radiography. Conclusions: Based on the literature included in this systematic review, we conclude that the MCI is useful as an auxiliary tool for identifying postmenopausal females at risk of low bone mineral density (BMD), as it correlates with skeletal BMD measured by dual X-ray absorptiometry. Nevertheless, other radiomorphometric indexes obtained from panoramic radiographs, such as panoramic mandibular index, mental index, and mandibular cortical width, are also valuable as auxiliary tools in the identification of postmenopausal females at risk, as they also correlate with BMD. Thus, it is not possible to affirm which index is the most reliable for the identification of postmenopausal females considering the literature screened.
