Se realizó un estudio retrospectivo, de enero a diciembre de 2016, de las muestras remitidas paraurianálisis y urocultivo de perros y gatos con sospecha de infección urinaria con el objetivo de, 1)identificar alteraciones del urianálisis, 2) determinar las principales bacterias involucradas y 3) analizarlos perfiles de sensibilidad ante 11 antibióticos. Todo esto para concientizar a la comunidad médicaveterinaria del país sobre la importancia de realizar exámenes de laboratorio y alertar sobre la resistenciaa los antibacterianos. Se incluyeron los datos de especie, edad, sexo y raza de cada animal, así como losresultados del urianálisis, urocultivo y prueba de sensibilidad antibiótica, los datos fueron tabuladosen Excel y los resultados se representaron mediante gráficos. Se encontró 101 animales con infecciónurinaria demostrada por métodos de laboratorio, 86 % perros y 14 % gatos, 45 % eran animales entreuno y cuatro años de edad, 21 % sin raza definida, en caninos el 66 % fueron hembras y en felinosno hubo diferencia por sexo. Los hallazgos del urianálisis más representativos fueron la presencia deleucocitos, bacterias, eritrocitos y proteínas que se presentaron en 4 de cada 5 casos de ambas especies.El 84 % de las infecciones fueron producidas por una bacteria, siendo Escherichia coli el agente másfrecuente en ambas especies, seguido de Proteus sp. y Staphylococcus pseudintermedius en perros y engatos Enterococcus faecalis. Se encontró, en promedio, una resistencia bacteriana superior al 30 % paralos antibióticos de uso más frecuente en infecciones urinarias. Los resultados obtenidos demuestran lanecesidad de utilizar métodos de laboratorio para diagnosticar apropiadamente animales sospechososde infecciones urinarias, prevenir una mayor resistencia bacteriana y mitigar los efectos negativos enla salud pública, ya que, actualmente en Costa Rica, el problema de resistencia a los antibióticos estápresente de manera considerable y el riesgo potencial existe.
