O termo “sustentabilidade” já está aliado em diversos setores de produção, cujo intuito é explorar os recursos naturais de forma que haja uma minimização dos impactos ambientais gerados pelo processo empregado. No Paraná, as florestas com Araucárias foram amplamente exploradas e pouca relevância foi atribuída aos produtos considerados não madeireiros. De acordo com a FAO (1995), pelo menos 150 PFNM têm significado no comércio internacional. Desta maneira, o objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar qualitativamente os potenciais não madeireiros das espécies catalogadas em um Inventário Florestal realizado em fragmentos de Floresta Ombrófila Mista (FOM) em pequenas propriedades rurais na comunidade de Assungui da cidade de Fernandes Pinheiro, Paraná, bem como classifica-las em categorias de usos e possíveis recomendações para enriquecimento de áreas de reserva legal para uma exploração de subprodutos. De acordo com o levantamento florístico foram registradas 107 espécies de caráter florestal distribuídas em 39 famílias botânicas. Destas, 64 espécies com potencial não madeireiro foram amostradas representando 59,81% do total registrado, conferindo uma ampla diversidade de produtos e utilizações. Essas espécies foram estruturadas em categorias de usos sendo a classe medicinal a mais representativa com 49,28% do total amostrado, seguido de ornamental (42,8%), melífera (33,17%), alimentícia (22,47%), forrageira (13,91%), fornecedora de taninos (10,7%), fibras (5,35%), resinas (5,35%), dentre outras categorias menos representativas em número de espécies. Das espécies amostradas, uma porção representativa possui ao menos uma propriedade não madeireira. Assim, através de enriquecimentos de áreas de reserva legal com espécies pré-determinadas, pode se contribuir para a restauração de ecossistemas e diversificação de renda de produtores rurais familiares.
Neste trabalho, objetivou-se avaliar o potencial da madeira de Hovenia dulcis Thunberg e Pinus elliottii na produção de lâminas de madeira. Foram avaliados os seguintes aspectos: o rendimento do processo de laminação e a qualidade das lâminas produzidas conforme a classificação da ABNT. Houve diferença estatística no rendimento médio do processo de laminação das toras sem casca, sendo 55,56 e 62,33% para as espécies Hovenia dulcis Thunberg e Pinus elliottii, respectivamente. Na classificação das lâminas, a madeira do cerne de Hovenia dulcis obteve resultados inferiores em relação à de alburno, pois 15,25% das lâminas não atingiram a melhor classificação de lâminas (E).
Estima-se entre 5 a 30 milhões as espécies de insetos existentes no mundo, os quais são historicamente objetos de diversos estudos pois colonizam praticamente todos os nichos ecológicos e o seu estudo depende da sua coleta, preservação e identificação. Por isso, as coleções entomológicas são necessárias, servindo como repositórios de espécimes de insetos coletados, preservados e organizados para fins científicos, educacionais ou de referência. Essas coleções são frequentemente utilizadas por entomologistas, pesquisadores e estudantes em estudos que englobam a diversidade de insetos, a taxonomia, a biologia, a ecologia e a distribuição geográfica de diferentes espécies. Desta forma, há uma iniciativa na Universidade Estadual do Centro-Oeste (UNICENTRO) em formar uma coleção didática e científica com o objetivo de fomentar informações ao público interessado. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho é relatar e prospectar as informações adquiridas na formação da coleção entomológica da UNICENTRO. Atualmente, encontram-se depositadas na coleção didática 5826 insetos, em 11 ordens distintas, dentre eles mostruários de algumas das principais pragas florestais da região sul do Brasil, tais como a Sirex noctilio (vespa-da-madeira) e Hedypathes betulinus (corintiano). Conclui-se que as a coleção entomológica é uma ferramenta valiosa para a pesquisa científica, e para a conscientização sobre os impactos e a importância dos insetos nas atividades humanas.
