This paper analyses conceptualizations of digital technology use that are aligned with sociocultural pedagogies of language learning, proposing a framework for developing sociocultural language pedagogies through digital technology use and presenting the language education workshops offered for high school students as embodying the principles of such a perspective. The paper is grounded on a sociocultural perspective of learning. Data gathering occurred in the New Talents Program, which is the background of the instructional material developed for the immersion week “Digital technologies and English language learning”. We conclude by discussing some opportunities and challenges for sociocultural pedagogies of language learning through digital literacies.
The education of teachers of English may be perceived from the perspective of the engagement of the future professionals with different literacy practices which they have to face in their daily activities. Information and communication digital technologies (ICDT) are part of several social practices which are constitutive of a new generation and at the same time exclude others who still do not have effective access to them (CGI.BR, 2011). Current paper analyzes the role(s) of educational discussion forum as a professional formation instrument for future teachers of English based on the engagement of one pre-service teacher in an elective unit course in Foreign Modern Languages -English, at a government-run university in the north of the state of Parana, Brazil. Results show the (res)signification of the future teacher within the space provided by the educational discussion forum and indicate the dynamics of the (re)construction of professional knowledge based on the use of the above-mentioned tool.
This chapter aims to demonstrate how a group of educators from a southern Brazilian state university designed and implemented formative workshops to sustain English language teachers' professional development through digital and media literacies. The chapter maps important changes that have happened in language teacher education in Brazil and the convergences these changes share with digital and media literacies coming from a sociocultural paradigm. It also presents and discusses the extent to which the instructional material the group of educators produced for the continuing education of English language teachers integrated 21st century skills and the standards from the TESOL technology framework. As a way to evaluate the instructional material, the chapter analyzes the representations and identities schoolteachers constructed when engaging with digital and media literacies through the instructional material. The chapter concludes by advocating more social, political and collaborative future research in language teacher education and digital and media literacies.
