Cet article propose une sociologie politique des responsables d’organisations humanitaires islamiques, en se focalisant sur les processus de dépolitisation affectant leurs engagements religieux. L’analyse s’appuie principalement sur des données ethnographiques récoltées en tant que bénévole au sein de plusieurs ONG françaises de 2017 à 2021. L’hypothèse est que l’engagement humanitaire suit des dynamiques différenciées de dépolitisation selon la génération militante : tandis que les fondateurs du Secours islamique France optent pour une relégation du religieux dans la sphère privée, les nouveaux acteurs de l’humanitaire musulman mettent en avant une technicisation de leurs compétences militantes. Si les responsables des structures étudiées partagent certaines caractéristiques sociales facilitant leur entrée en humanitaire, leurs engagements se font à des moments différents de leur carrière militante. Surtout, ces deux modalités de dépolitisation se comprennent de manière relationnelle, les circulations entre associations renforçant l’apprentissage itératif des contraintes politiques.
Résumé En France, les ONG confessionnelles se positionnent de manière différenciée dans le champ de la bienfaisance marqué par un partenariat politico-religieux établi sous la prédominance de l'État. Si des processus d'atténuation du religieux relèvent d'enjeux communs à toutes ces ONG, il existe entre elles une différence de traitement. Les associations musulmanes font face à des politiques sécuritaires et de défiance, tandis que les stratégies d'atténuation du religieux des associations catholiques visent à perpétuer leur association pluriséculaire avec les pouvoirs publics. Les appartenances religieuses déterminent donc une position de départ comme outsiders , pour les ONG musulmanes, ou insiders , pour les ONG catholiques, et ce au détriment d'autres processus de légitimation. En réponse aux contraintes du partenariat politico-religieux, les ONG confessionnelles déploient des stratégies différentes pour accéder aux ressources publiques. Fondée sur deux terrains ethnographiques, la comparaison entre les ONG catholiques de la cause des chrétiens d'Orient et les ONG humanitaires islamiques permet de définir les contours du champ de la bienfaisance en France.
