No abstract
A crítica literária de Roberto Schwarz concilia análise imanente rigorosa com considerações a respeito do processo social. Trata-se de um esforço voltado para a compreensão das relações entre objetivação da forma literária e dinâmica social. A análise do romance Senhora, de José de Alencar, além de permitir visualizar as minúcias de sua prática crítica e apresentar considerações importantes sobre a formação da sociedade brasileira, deixa entrever duas conquistas do procedimento de leitura de Schwarz: a consideração das inconsistências formais como elementos valiosos e produtivos; e a faceta bastante peculiar do crítico como uma espécie de teórico do pós-colonialismo.
Os autores desta obra: 1. RESUMOA hipótese deste trabalho é que a forma literária é oriunda de uma relação complexa e produtiva com o contexto social a partir do qual ela se origina; e que a crítica literária, sobretudo em seu processo de acumulação, o qual pressupõe uma disputa intensa, enseja a incorporação de camadas de sentido até então não percebidas à obra literária. O argumento central é que a obra de William Faulkner apresenta uma tensão temporal interna, oriunda do arranjo formal, que em última instância é expressão de uma angústia vivenciada socialmente através da impossibilidade de reabilitar o passado e da hesitação em relação ao presente/futuro. O nosso estudo se concentra, portanto, na investigação das técnicas e soluções narrativas propostas por William Faulkner em suas obras modernistas mais desafiadoras de modo a perscrutar os meios pelos quais as soluções literárias alcançadas pelo autor respondem às questões mais prementes do contexto social, nesse caso a especificidade social do Sul dos Estados Unidos. As principais obras em discussão são O som e a fúria (1929( ), Enquanto agonizo (1930, Luz em agosto (1932) e Absalão, Absalão! (1936. O propósito é revelar as tensões internas entre os desenvolvimentos estéticos e os conteúdos sociais de modo que as contradições da forma literária e da sociedade despontem como criticamente produtivas. Para tal, fazse necessário incursionar pela obra, através de leituras cerradas, sem perder a atenção para as questões sociais mais importantes de seu contexto, a saber, a Guerra Civil norteamericana (1861-1865), a Reconstrução (1865-1875), o período pós-Reconstrução marcado pela ascensão das políticas Jim Crow, a queda da bolsa de valores de Nova York em 1929 e a Grande Depressão na década de 1930.
