Automedicação é o uso de medicamentos sem a orientação profissional qualificada. É um problema de saúde pública que afeta especialmente a população estudantil, que muitas vezes recorre a medicamentos para melhorar o desempenho acadêmico ou tratar doenças comuns. Este estudo teve por objetivo analisar o risco da automedicação e das reações adversas na população universitária brasileira. Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa de literatura utilizando as bases de dados Scielo, BVS e Portal CAPES. Foram utilizados os descritores: Automedicação; Estudantes; Efeitos Adversos. O operador AND foi utilizado para refinar a busca. Foram definidos como criterios de inclusão: artigos completos, dissertações e teses disponíveis gratuitamente; idioma de publicação em português. Foram excluídos os artigos que não se adequaram aos critérios de inclusão, artigos duplicados ou que fugissem da temática. Foram econtrados 275 estudos. Após a aplicação dos critérios de inclusão e exclusão, foram selecionados 22 estudos. A automedicação é um problema de saúde pública e é uma realidade especialmente entre os estudantes universitários, principalmente nos cursos da área de saúde. Os analgésicos/antipiréticos, antiespasmódicos, antiácidos e antidiarréicos, bem como os antibióticos, vitaminas e anticoncepcionais são os fármacos mais utilizados pela população estudantil. A publicidade e a propaganda de medicamentos, a disponibilidade e acesso aos medicamentos, a falta de acesso ao serviço de saúde e a demora no atendimento possuem impactos substanciais no aumento da prática da automedicação.
