De par sa configuration, le territoire nîmois est fortement exposé au risque inondation par ruissellement urbain torrentiel, associé à une problématique de cours d'eau temporaires appelés « cadereaux ». Le 10 octobre 2014, il a été touché par un épisode pluvio-orageux dont les caractéristiques sont localement comparables à celles de l'événement historique du 3 octobre 1988 (cumul de l'ordre de 400 mm, intensité supérieure à 100 mm/h). Le retour d'expérience de la gestion de cet épisode torrentiel, présenté de manière chronologique, permet d'illustrer les actions opérationnelles mises en œuvre avant, pendant et après l'événement. Celui-ci représente une illustration du processus de gestion intégrée du risque d'inondation torrentielle de type crue-éclair au niveau d'un territoire engagé dans une démarche PAPI (Programme d'Actions de Prévention des Inondations). Si les impacts associés à cet évènement ont été finalement limités grâce notamment aux réalisations menées dans le cadre du PAPI, le retour d'expérience qui en a découlé et la capitalisation associée ont été valorisés pour renforcer les actions de prévention du risque inondation sur le territoire nîmois. Celles-ci se poursuivent aujourd'hui sur le plan technique et financier grâce la continuité d'engagement politique sur la thématique de la prévention des inondations depuis 1988 et à la convergence des interventions des acteurs publics dans le cadre des PAPI.
