Anadenanthera colubrina (Benth) Brenan, a plant known in the Northeastern Region of Brazil as angico, is widely used in traditional folk medicine to treat respiratory and inflammatory diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the antifungal activity, determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), the minimum fungicidal concentration and the fungal kinetics (death curve) in addition to the interactive effect of the dry extract of angico in association with the antifungals fluconazole and nystatin against yeasts of the genus Candida. The dry extract was obtained by rotoevaporation. Tests for evaluation of antifungal activity, determination of the MIC and the MFC as well as the evaluation of the interactive effect with conventional antifungal were done by disk diffusion and microdilution technique. For the evaluation of the angico's effect on fungal growth, death curve was utilized. The results show the angico's antifungal potential in all of the strains tested, having MIC of 1.0 mg/mL. It was observed that the fungal kinetics of 2x MIC, MIC and ½ MIC had similar effects; 6 h was their best time after incubation. There was fungistatic activity reduction (2 log 10 UFC/mL) from the initial inoculum of 1.0 mg/mL. Interactive effect was not observed when used in association with nystatin, but showed synergistic effect when used with fluconazole. In these data, one can see that angico is a species rich in biological activity; being promising species, the isolation and detection of its bioactive compounds is necessary.
The social determinants of health directly influence in the health-disease process. In the pandemic caused by the novel Coronavirus, denominated Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), these factors imply the transmission and worsening of the disease. This work is aimed to correlate the social vulnerability in Brazilian regions with the number of COVID-19 confirmed cases. The analysis was made through a qualitative approach in the search for information made available by public agencies such as the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), State Department of Health, Municipal Department of Health and the literature indexed on the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) database using the health descriptors: “Social determinants of health”, “Health-disease process”, “Social vulnerability” and “COVID-19”. As results, the discrepancy between regionals incidence and mortality rates suggests a relationship with social inequality and COVID-19 indices in the regions of Brazil. North and Northeast had the worst rates in most of the evaluated parameters. Therefore, the vulnerable population of fundamental resources for dignified survival is more susceptible to aggravations and failures in coping with new infectious diseases.
This study aimed to determine spectrum of antimicrobial activity of crude ethanolic extract (CEE), chloroform (CHCl3) and ethyl acetate (EtOAc) fractions, to determine influence of CHCl3 fraction on Staphylococcus aureus growth and hemolytic activity. Antimicrobial screening of CEE, CHCl3 and EtOAc fractions was carried out using broth microdilution technique against standard strains: Staphyloccocus aureus ATCC25923, Escherichia coli ATCC25922, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC27853 and Candida albicans ATCC76645 to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). Time kill curves were performed to determine influence of CHCl3 fraction on MIC and ½ MIC concentrations on S. aureus growth. Hemolytic activity of CHCl3 was performed in human erythrocytes to report the cytotoxic effect. CHCl3 fraction showed activity against S. aureus with MIC=1024 µg mL-1 and MBC=2048 µg mL-1. This fraction did not show activity against other tested strains, as well as the CEE and EtOAc fraction. Time kill curve of S. aureus treated with CHCl3 fraction showed that at MIC this fraction has bacteriostatic activity, which was not observed with the ½ MIC. Hemolytic activity demonstrated that when CHCl3 fraction in MIC does not present membrane damage of erythrocytes, since it did not cause hemolysis. Studies should be conducted to evaluate the activity of CHCl3 fraction against S. aureus with different antimicrobial resistance profiles, in addition to evaluating the potential for resistance reversion by in vitro combination studies. The study demonstrated that the species P. montealegreanum can be an important source of compounds of importance for combating microorganisms of clinical importance.

In Brazil's semi arid region, Schinopsis brasiliensis Engl. (Anacardiaceae) is used in traditional medicine, but little is known about its chemical, pharmacological and toxicological properties. In this study, the phytochemical and biological potential of the extract of S. brasiliensis (EESb) was evaluated. The main secondary metabolites in EESb were quantified by spectroscopy in the visible region. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the extract, of antibiotics alone and of antibiotics combined with the extract were determined using microdilution method, and the acute toxicity was determined by in vivo tests. In microbiological testing, the EESb showed good antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and, when combined with synthetic antibiotics, potentiated its activity by reducing the MIC values. In vivo studies showed low acute toxicity in rats treated with EESb. These results demonstrate the richness of the phenolic compounds in S. brasiliensis and its effectiveness as an antibacterial and in modulating activities of bacterial resistance. The probable low toxicity was also demonstrated.
