A cárie dentária é considerada uma doença comum entre a população brasileira, um problema de saúde pública, não somente pela sua alta prevalência e incidência, mas também em virtude de causar danos aos indivíduos, por gerar dor e desconforto, afetando a qualidade de vida dos mesmos. Sua etiologia é considerada multifatorial e pode estar associada com fatores biológicos, comportamentais, socioeconômicos e de acesso aos serviços odontológicos. O objetivo geral do estudo foi avaliar a influência de fatores sociodemográficos, comportamentais e de acesso a serviços odontológicos na presença de cárie em escolares do ensino fundamental de Governador Mangabeira, BA. O presente estudo possui natureza descritiva com abordagem quantitativa e os sujeitos da pesquisa foram escolares de 08 a 12 anos examinados clinicamente seguindo os critérios da Organização Mundial da Saúde em relação à experiência de cárie. Foi aplicado um questionário com perguntas dos fatores socioeconômicos. Para analisar a relação entre a variável dependente e as independentes aplicou-se a regressão logística múltipla não condicional. As escolas da zona urbana, tanto públicas quanto a privada, apresentaram resultados mais satisfatórios em relação à presença da cárie dentária quando comparados aos da zona rural. Das variáveis analisadas apenas a idade do escolar teve relevância significativa para a presença da cárie. Os resultados indicam a necessidade da adoção de medidas de saúde pública dirigidas aos grupos mais vulneráveis no intuito de contribuir para a promoção de equidade em saúde bucal.
