A ditadura quis ser a primeira a formalizar o reconhecimento e, assim, marcar uma posição clara a chilenos, brasileiros e a quem pudesse interessar, mesmo que isso baixasse a guarda do Brasil contra críticas e ataques. (Simon, 2021, p. 214) No dia quatro de setembro de 2019, o presidente de extrema-direita Jair Bolsonaro atacou Alberto Bachelet, pai da ex-presidenta Michelle Bachelet, ao afirmar que, se o regime de Augusto Pinochet não tivesse matado pessoas como ele, um general legalista de brigada da Força Aérea, o Chile hoje seria uma espécie de Cuba da América do Sul. Não era a primeira vez que Bolsonaro mobilizava em seu discurso uma memória positiva da ditadura chilena. Em outras ocasiões, Bolsonaro já havia afirmado que Pinochet "fez o que tinha que ser feito", e que ele precisou "agir de forma violenta para recuperar o país." (Carneiro, 2019).Não é de se estranhar que Bolsonaro e os militares que apoiam o seu governo de extrema-direita tenham, em relação às ditaduras do Cone Sul, o que Steve Stern chama de memória de salvação (Stern, 2009, pp. 43-72). Há um saudosismo escancarado em relação a esse período sombrio da história do nosso continente, quando os regimes autoritários em vigor inclusive se apoiavam em suas práticas repressivas, como indicam diversos estudos 1 .
