The innovative quantitative results of this study can help us to better understand muscle synergy abnormality in CP children, which is related to their motor dysfunction and even the physiological change in their nervous system.
Using multi-frequency magnetoencephalography (MEG) data, we investigated whether the effective connectivity (EC) network of patients with childhood absence epilepsy (CAE) is altered during the inter-ictal period in comparison with healthy controls. MEG data from 13 untreated CAE patients and 10 healthy controls were recorded. Correlation analysis and Granger causality analysis were used to construct an EC network at the source level in eight frequency bands. Alterations in the spatial pattern and topology of the network in CAE were investigated by comparing the patients with the controls. The network pattern was altered mainly in 1-4 Hz, showing strong connections within the frontal cortex and weak connections in the anterior-posterior pathways. The EC involving the precuneus/posterior cingulate cortex (PC/PCC) significantly decreased in low-frequency bands. In addition, the parameters of graph theory were significantly altered in several low- and high-frequency bands. CAE patients display frequency-specific abnormalities in the network pattern even during the inter-ictal period, and the frontal cortex and PC/PCC might play crucial roles in the pathophysiology of CAE. The EC network of CAE patients was over-connective and random during the inter-ictal period. This study is the first to reveal the frequency-specific alteration in the EC network during the inter-ictal period in CAE patients. Multiple-frequency MEG data are useful in investigating the pathophysiology of CAE, which can serve as new biomarkers of this disorder.
Zhu, C., Ma, C., Yu, S.‐Y., Tang, L., Zhang, W. & Lu, X. 2009: A detailed pollen record of vegetation and climate changes in Central China during the past 16 000 years. Boreas, 10.1111/j.1502‐3885.2009.00098.x. ISSN 0300‐9483.
Detailed pollen analyses, along with magnetic and loss‐on‐ignition (LOI) measurements, were conducted on a 3 m long peat sequence recovered from the Dajiuhu Basin, the Shennongjia Mountains in Central China. Ten AMS 14C dates provide a firm age control on this pollen record in terms of vegetation changes governed essentially by the rise and fall of the Asian summer monsoon during the past 16 000 years. Between 16 000 and 12 700 cal. yr BP, pollen assemblages were dominated by coniferous and broad‐leaved trees, indicating a mixed forest landscape corresponding to the initial establishment of the monsoonal climate after the Last Glaciation. The progressive increases in percentages of evergreen tree pollen after 12 700 cal. yr BP point to a steady enhancement of the summer monsoon, which was episodically weakened during the Younger Dryas stadial. From 11 000 to 6000 cal. yr BP, values of coniferous and deciduous tree pollen decreased, while evergreen broad‐leaved tree pollen increased substantially, implying a stronger than normal monsoonal climate condition corresponding to the Holocene Hypsithermal Interval. A great reduction in the values of evergreen tree pollen at about 4000 cal. yr BP indicates a sudden retreat of the summer monsoon from this area.
Muscle synergies are considered to be building blocks underlying motor behaviors. The goal of this study is to explore an objective and effective method to assess the upper limb motor dysfunction of cerebral palsy (CP) children from the aspect of muscle synergy analysis. Fourteen CP children and 10 typically developed (TD) children were recruited to perform three similar upper limb motion tasks related to the movements of elbow and shoulder joints, and surface electromyographic (sEMG) signals were recorded from 10 upper arm and shoulder muscles involved in the defined tasks. Non-negative matrix factorization algorithm was used to extract muscle synergies and the corresponding activation patterns during three similar tasks. For each subject in TD group, four muscle synergies were extracted in each task. Whereas, fewer mature synergies were recruited in CP group, and many abnormal synergy structures specific to CP group appeared. In view of neuromuscular control strategy differences, three synergy-related parameters were proposed and synergy structure similarity coefficient was found to have high ability in depicting the inter-subject similarity within task and the intra-subject similarity between tasks. Seven upper limb assessment (UPA) metrics, which were defined as the combinations of synergy structure similarity coefficients of three tasks, were proposed to assess the upper limb motor function of CP children. The experimental results demonstrated that these UPA metrics were able to assess upper limb motor function comprehensively and effectively. The proposed assessment method can serve as a promising approach to quantify the abnormality of muscle synergies, thus offering potential to derive a physiologically based quantitative index for assessing upper limb motor function in CP clinical diagnosis and rehabilitation.
