ABSTRACT. A method for fluid-stress modeling of 3D seismic, and drilling data, provided new information on the stress conditions, and on the hydrodynamics of the U11 layer of the Upper Jurassic sandstone reservoir in the Arigol field, Western Siberia, Russia. It is proposed to detect and outline oil fields, and divide them into isolated traps, marked by low sedimentary overburden pressure, and fluid-trapping properties based on correlation between the structural pattern and mapped stress. A different systematic approach was adopted, considering: the use of 3D component seismic data of Vp and Vs velocities; the density ρ, and the stress models of the reservoirs to detect the areas of low overburden pressure P(x, y, z); and the vertical inclination of fractures (faults), ϕ(x, y, z), caused by the non-hydrostatic behavior of stress. Keywords: seismic structured media, porous media, fractured media.RESUMO.
ABSTRACT. Contrary to the Cauchy and Poisson classical seismic theory of the continuum, the new theory for structured (also called porous, fractured, or blocked) media must contain several degrees of freedom. This fact is evident because elementary blocks (grains) may transfer the motion by contact interaction, by rotation, and by group of particles. Therefore, the energy content is not only contained within the first spatial derivatives (strains), but the potential energy content is within the second (curvatures) and other higher order spatial derivatives. Thus, the equation of motion of porous media should contain higher order spatial derivatives, and may even contain infinite order spatial derivatives. Keywords: seismic structured media, porous media, fractured media.
The methodology presented was developed for processing and mathematical interpretation of aeromagnetic data derived from two‐dimensional sources. The inversion is based on the ridge regression technique as extended in Marquardt (1963) to nonlinear problems. The mathematical formulation provides a statistical approach for study of the efficiency of the solution. A procedure for data preparation is presented which includes a critical evaluation of the digital data obtained during the aerosurvey, joining of flight segments into a single line, and regional‐residual separation for profile analysis to set up the initial model approximation. The forward model is analyzed using predictive diagnostics called sensitivity coefficients and parameter correlation matrix. The parameter confidence intervals take into account the measurements of the nonlinearity of the quadratic approximation to the object function. The initial approximation is determined by profile analysis and by the geologic information that defines the forward model and its constraints. The nonuniqueness of the solution results in an interpretation that can be refined as new geologic information is applied for additional model constraints. Synthetic models are used to test and study the convergence and statistical properties of the solution, and to show the ability of the method to resolve anomalies due to various sources. The procedure is also applied to data obtained from aerosurveys over an oil exploration area of the upper Amazon sedimentary basin of Brazil. The validity of the solution is discussed in terms of its compatibility with the geologic information and constraints, and in terms of the statistical properties of the model parameters used to explain the observed data.
Abstract. The Kalman-Bucy method is here analized and applied to the solution of a specific filtering problem to increase the signal message/noise ratio. The method is a time domain treatment of a geophysical process classified as stochastic non-stationary. The derivation of the estimator is based on the relationship between the Kalman-Bucy and Wiener approaches for linear systems. In the present work we emphasize the criterion used, the model with apriori information, the algorithm, and the quality as related to the results. The examples are for the ideal well-log response, and the results indicate that this method can be used on a variety of geophysical data treatments, and its study clearly offers a proper insight into modeling and processing of geophysical problems.Mathematical subject classification: 49N45, 54H20, 74H50, 93C05.
ABSTRACT. We present in this paper a seismic-stratigraphical framework for pressure prediction for oil and gas exploration in sedimentary basins, that is based on seismic information, with application to a marine part of the Jequitinhonha basin (east of the State of Bahia, Brazil). For this purpose it is necessary the knowledge of velocity distributions (compressional vP and shear vS), that can be obtained from seismic sections, petrophysical information and empirical models, and the distribution of density (ρ). We show some details of the theoretical modeling method, with an example that shows how pressure varies in the subsurface. We highlight that pressure that does not necessarily increase linearly with depth, but in a complex way that requires specific numerical calculations to be able to see important details related to a reservoir and surroundings. The model considers the vertical gravity load as the source of pressure in the geological formations, and in the present case we do not take into account the effects of formation curvatures, faulting, diagenesis and lateral tectonic events. We show that the meaning of cap rock of a reservoir is not to be related to lithology, but directly to the physics of high and low pressure zones that results from the mechanics of solid bodies under a stress-strain system; in this direction, and as a curiosity, we also show how a basement rock can become a reservoir. It is important to emphasize that an accurate prediction needs a 3D model for a meaningful and complete practical application, in the other hand, it requires handling large matrices. Keywords: basin modeling, seismic velocity analysis, pressure prediction, empirical models.
