En los últimos años la medicina tradicional ha recibido un gran impulso, sobre todo el estudio de las plantas medicinales. En nuestro país se hace cada vez más creciente el uso de plantas medicinales resultando aún insuficiente la información etnofarmacológica que conduzca a la identificación de aquellas especies vegetales con potencialidades para la búsqueda de nuevos principios activos con propiedades sedantes. El objetivo de este estudio fue caracterizar el estado actual de la utilización de plantas medicinales con efectos sedantes en la comunidad Songo del municipio Songo- La Maya, provincia de Santiago de Cuba. Se entrevistaron 200 personas. Se identificaron las especies vegetales más empleadas por la población, efectuándose el cálculo de los índices de valor de uso y nivel de uso significativo. Se reportaron un total de 10 plantas medicinales empleadas en la comunidad como sedantes, siendo las hojas la parte de la planta más utilizada, en estado fresco mayormente. La forma de preparación más reportada fue la infusión. Las plantas con mayores índices de valor de uso y mayor nivel de uso significativo fueron Ocimum tenuiflorum L., Justicia pectoralis Jacq. y Lawsonia inermis L. Estas especies son una fuente potencial para dar continuidad a los estudios, con la finalidad de desarrollar nuevas alternativas terapéuticas.
