chapters have a relatively consistent format. Each subject is covered in a logical, structured manner. The final section of each chapter deals with 'Emerging developments' where the authors highlight any interesting developments they are aware of. Each chapter finishes with a list of Key Points, a list of 6-10 Key References, and a comprehensive list of the references cited in the text (up to 200 in some chapters). The balance of text is more favoured towards the pharmacology aspects. However, the physiology chapters all cover their subject well. The content of the chapters is all of a high standard and would be suitable for those preparing for postgraduate examinations. It is also a good reference source and will be of use to those involved in teaching these subjects to trainees. There were a few gaps such as fetal/neonatal/ obstetric physiology, and a few drugs more widely used or available outside the USA (paracoxib, temazepam) which were not mentioned. I was surprised that the chapter on neuromuscular blocking drugs did not address allergy as an adverse effect. However, these are only minor problems in a book which contains a vast amount of well written and well-presented information. I think that the editors have achieved their aim with this book. The book also comes with a link to access a searchable online version via expertconsult.com which also includes linkage through Medline to the text of references used and access to a library of the images (figures and tables) for each chapter. This linkage was straightforward and functioned well.In summary, this is a useful well-written textbook of pharmacology and physiology. There is a greater emphasis on the pharmacology, but both sciences are dealt with to a high standard. The images (figures and tables) are excellent and complement the text. I am happy to recommend this book as a useful learning and reference source.
