En Chile, como en la mayoría de las sociedades, la parentalidad ha estado principalmente a cargo de las mujeres y no existen muchos estudios acerca de cómo las parejas manejan la llegada de su primer bebé. Objetivo: El siguiente estudio busca describir los principales procesos involucrados en la construcción de la coparentalidad durante la transición a la parentalidad en parejas heterosexuales. Método: Siete parejas fueron entrevistadas durante el embarazo y el postparto. Las transcripciones se analizaron siguiendo los lineamientos del análisis temático. Resultados: la mayoría de las parejas no planificaron su embarazo, razón por la que se vivió con altos montos de ambivalencia. Los roles al interior de la pareja se distribuyeron de manera tradicional desde el embarazo. Los conflictos entre los miembros de la pareja de evadían o naturalizaban, atribuyéndolos a los cambios hormonales y a las demandas del bebé, existiendo poco espacio para la reflexión y la discusión. Conclusión: el principal desafío para las parejas es pasar de un estilo relacional reactivo a uno preventivo en el que la parentalidad y la coparentalidad se pueda planificar y co-construir.
