Com o surgimento dos novos problemas de saúde, elevou-se a busca por atendimentos e internações em serviços de urgência e emergência, onde os enfermeiros vivenciam diariamente inúmeros casos de situações que carecem de atenção, cuidado e rapidez durante a prestação da assistência. Portanto, este estudo teve por objetivo evidenciar a atuação do profissional enfermeiro atuante em unidade de urgência e emergência. Trata-se de uma revisão sistemática da literatura, com abordagem qualitativa, através de busca nas bases de dados “Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online” e “Base de Dados de Enfermagem na Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde”, com uso dos Descritores em Ciências da Saúde em associação ao operador booleano “AND”, pesquisando da seguinte forma: “Papel AND Enfermeiro AND Urgência AND Emergência”. No estudo foi levado em consideração a percepção dos próprios enfermeiros, entende-se que os papéis envolvem a minimização do tempo de espera dos usuários com o atendimento oportuno e baseado nas carências, dando prioridade para os que encontram-se em pior estado, a tomada de decisões com segurança, autonomia, conhecimento e rapidez, sempre buscando satisfação dos pacientes. Conclui-se que o enfermeiro geralmente assume o papel de um líder dentro das unidades de urgência e emergência. Atuando desde a recepção do usuário, com o acolhimento e a escuta qualificada, atua na parte prática-assistencial, realizando as funções exclusivas da sua categoria, mas também auxilia durante os cuidados dos outros profissionais, além de atuar enquanto gestor, organizando o setor, a equipe e toda a logística que envolve o setor de urgência e emergência.
