O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar o cenário que envolve a cacauicultura orgânica no município de Medicilândia – PA, bem como o diagnóstico de suas potencialidades e limitações. Os dados foram levantados em duas etapas, a primeira foi realizada através de pesquisa qualitativa com os gestores da COPOAM e com os professores dos Cursos de Engenharia Florestal e Engenharia Agronômica da Universidade Federal do Pará – Campus de Altamira, a fim de se conhecer as especificidades e os aspectos mais relevantes da produção e comercialização de cacau orgânico no município. Em seguida, elaborou-se o questionário estruturado para a pesquisa quantitativa correspondente à segunda etapa, onde foram entrevistados os 25 membros da COPOAM, por meio de técnicas de Diagnóstico Rural Rápido (DRR). Para a análise dos dados, utilizou-se o método SWOT Cruzada, que possibilitou identificar os itens considerados mais importantes pelos entrevistados e a correlação entre eles. Entre as forças, destacou-se: a produção de amêndoas de elevada qualidade; o maior valor agregado do produto; e a conservação dos recursos naturais. A falta de cultura cooperativista na região e a descapitalização da cooperativa foram os fatores de maior importância dentre as fraquezas apontadas. Como maiores oportunidades estão o maior envolvimento da família no sistema de produção e a troca de conhecimento entre o meio científico e o rural. Quanto às ameaças, a dificuldade de acesso a insumos orgânicos e à falta de assistência técnica voltada para a produção orgânica obtiveram maior notoriedade. Por fim, constatou-se que apesar da cacauicultura orgânica estar ocupando maior espaço na economia regional, a COPOAM tem encontrado dificuldades para comercializar e expandir sua produção, mediante à existência de entraves financeiros no recebimento das vendas, o que obriga muitos agricultores a subprecificarem o cacau orgânico no mercado local, fazendo desta atividade uma alternativa pouco atraente no ponto de vista econômico.
