Transtorno mental é um distúrbio importante no pensamento, sentimentos ou comportamento de um indivíduo que reflete um problema de função mental. No Brasil o movimento social pelos direitos dos pacientes psiquiátricos teve início em 1978, e somente em 2001 que a nova política de saúde mental foi conquistada, através da Lei 10.216. Essa lei trouxe a reforma psiquiátrica estabelecendo assim, um novo conceito de instituição para indivíduos com transtornos mentais, ocasionando a reabilitação do paciente a uma vida social, reintegrando-o e proporcionando tratamento apropriado. O principal resultado dessa reforma foi a organização da rede de serviços psicossociais. Entre estes serviços, os Centros de Atenção Psicossociais, que são unidades exercendo serviços de saúde de caráter aberto e comunitário. A Organização Mundial de Saúde, tem orientado a integração da medicina tradicional e complementar nos sistemas de atenção à saúde. E atendendo a essa orientação o Brasil, elaborou a Política de Práticas Integrativas e Complementares, que são meios terapêuticos que procuram a prevenção e recuperação de doenças, utilizando recursos que vinculam o ser humano com o meio ambiente e a sociedade.
