Au printemps 1930, l'Association des travailleuses sociales 1 lance un concours visant à récompenser la meilleure monographie d'une famille ouvrière. Le règlement du concours réclame que cette famille soit suivie depuis deux ans au moins par l'assistante sociale auteure du texte :Pour qu'une visiteuse y voie clair à propos d'[une famille], ce n'est pas trop, à coup sûr, des deux ans de travail suivi […]. Mais encore, au cours de ces deux ans, faut-il que la visiteuse soit devenue l'amie discrète à qui sont allées bien des confidences, qui les a recueillies, qui y a réfléchi. La lente connaissance qu'elle a acquise ainsi, reçue dans cette famille, des habitudes qui la maintiennent, des forces instinctives ou des forces spirituelles qui la meuvent, c'est le fondement le plus sûr et le plus durable de son action sur elle. 2 1 L'Association est créée en 1922 par Juliette Delagrange, surintendante d'usine.
