Comment définir la communication au sein des sports collectifs ? Apparemment anodine, cette question se révèle d’une grande complexité. Par l’entremise d’une Comparaison par Paires de Condorcet, nous explorons les représentations de 250 joueurs et de 50 entraîneurs de sports collectifs sur ce sujet. Les représentations de ces derniers confirment le flou entourant la notion de communication. En effet, les six modalités proposées aux suffrages des répondants obtiennent des votes. Néanmoins, la majorité des joueurs et des entraîneurs considèrent que ce sont les modalités « Communications verbales » et « Passes » qui définissent le mieux la communication au sein des sports collectifs. Les signes moteurs (appels de balle, feintes et courses diverses, replacements, etc.) utilisés in situ sont les grands oubliés de la majorité des enquêtés. Bien que sachant parfaitement la façon dont il faut jouer, les joueurs et les entraîneurs se révèlent pourtant dans l’impossibilité de mettre au jour les lois qui inspirent la façon dont ils jouent et qui animent l’ensemble de leurs conduites. Dans une optique heuristique, il ressort de ce travail des pistes intéressantes afin de définir le concept de communication dans les sports collectifs. Ce travail peut aussi être à la source d’une réflexion sur de nouvelles formes d’entraînements sportifs.
