Resumo: Neste texto, o primeiro capítulo do relatório "As ciências sociais no Brasil" enviado à CAPES por Luiz Costa Pinto (em parceria com Edison Carneiro), o autor investiga as conexões históricas entre o processo de emergência, formação e crise das ciências sociais e o padrão de mudança social no Brasil. Embora este gênero intelectual - balanço da produção sociológica - tenha sido frequente nos anos 1950, o relato de Costa Pinto se destaca por colocar em primeiro plano as idas e vindas do processo de constituição das ciências sociais no país, mobilizando, para tal, o conceito de "marginalidade estrutural".
F aleceu no Rio de Janeiro, onde vivia com a família, o professor Waldemiro Bazzanella. Não tenho nenhuma dúvida de que, para a maioria das pessoas, este nome não significa nada. Era "a face in the crowd"… Acontece que, para outros -e entre estes eu me incluo -, Bazzanella é alguém difícil de não ser lembrado, pela pessoa que era e pelo trabalho que realizou. Bazzanella morreu nos primeiros dias de fevereiro de 2002.Ele advinha de uma família de imigrantes italianos que se radicou no Brasil em fins do século XIX, em Santa Catarina. Seu avô foi um dos fundadores da cidade de Rio do Sul, onde seus familiares exerceram cargos de prefeito, tabelião, e quase tudo o mais… Sua irmã, Eda, uma bela ragazza, tem uma filha tão bela quanto a mãe e que hoje é tabeliã na cidade. Na Itália, a família era originária do Passo do Brener na fronteira com a Áustria, norte da Itália. A gente dessa área não tem os característicos físicos "mediterrâneos" que se costuma associar ao italiano típico. Eles tendem a ser louros, de olhos azuis ou verdes, de aparência mais saxônica do que latina. E assim era o Bazzanella. Como acontece com a maioria das pessoas a quem quero bem, ou com quem não quero nada, a não ser distância e ausência do meu caminho, eu conheci o Baza -como nós o chamávamos -numa sala de aula,
