La naissance de la langue littéraire serbe moderne est liée à deux programmes de réforme de la langue : d’abord en 1783 Dositej Obradović, dans la Lettre à Haralmpije, son manifeste de diffusion des Lumières, a souligné la nécessité de remplacer la langue de l’élite érudite, incompréhensible au peuple, par la langue parlée serbe ; et une trentaine d’années plus tard, dans quelques écrits et surtout dans sa préface au Dictionnaire serbe (1818), Vuk Karadžić, sous l’influence de son mentor, le philologue slovène Jernej Kopitar, a donné le programme d’une vernacularisation radicale de la langue littéraire serbe ainsi que la purification et standardisation de l’usage linguistique des partisans de la réforme de Dositej Obradović.
