El género Dichotomius Hope, 1838 es un género americano con 148 especies, siendo más diverso en Sudamérica, con cerca de cien especies. A la fecha el estado taxonómico del grupo es aun confuso y es necesaria una revisión (Medina et al. 2001, Kohlmann 2003). En México se localizan cinco especies (Kohlmann 2003), D amplicollis Harold, D. annae Kohlmann & Solís, D. colonicus (Say), D. satanas Harold y D. yucatanus Bates. El grupo carolinus se caracteriza por el ensanchamiento de la primera a la quinta estría elitral hacia su tercio apical y por el tamaño superior a los 23 mm. En Norte y Centroamérica existen cuatro especies relacionadas (Kohlmann & Solís 1997), que forman el grupo carolinus: D. carolinus L., D. colonicus (Say), D. amicitiae Kohlmann & Solís y D. annae Kohlmann & Solís. Según Kohlmann (2003) en la Península de Yucatán están presentes D. colonicus, D. yucatanus y D. amplicollis. Sin embargo, D. maya sp. nov. puede haber sido confundida con D. colonicus,
