Introdução: A correta execução do Programa Nacional de Alimentação Escolar pode-se constituir como oportunidade de articulação entre a agricultura familiar e o desenvolvimento agrícola, econômico e social local, neste sentido o objetivo deste estudo é analisar a execução do PNAE quanto à compra de alimentos oriundos da agricultura familiar. Método: Estudo do tipo transversal desenvolvido a partir de dados secundários de domínio público. Foram coletados dados de 75 municípios brasileiros espalhados pelas cinco regiões do país referentes a gestão do PNAE em 2019. Para avaliação da compra foi utilizada a referência do mínimo de 30% dos recursos repassados pelo FNDE, como preconizado na Lei nº 11.947/2009. Resultados: 21% dos municípios analisados não conseguiram alcançar o mínimo de 30%, a região Sul teve maior destaque no alcance deste dispositivo legal e região nordeste lidera as inadequações, os municípios de grande porte foram os que mais se distanciaram do aparato normativo analisado, a inviabilidade de fornecimento regular e constante dos gêneros alimentícios foi à justificativa que mais se destacou para o não atendimento dos 30% e a maioria dos municípios fizeram chamada pública. Considerações finais: Embora se tenha uma lista de desafios e entraves para que a gestão do PNAE não concretize as recomendações da legislação, há um cenário de resultados positivos e exitosos tanto para a agricultura familiar e para o desenvolvimento rural local quanto para a o alcance dos objetivos do programa.
