I ÅpningssekvensenKnut Hamsuns roman åpner med et spørsmål: "Den lange, lange sti over myrene og inn i skogene hvem har trakket opp den?" (Hamsun 2008, 7). Resten av romanen er utformet som et svar på spørsmålet og fortsetter slik:Mannen, mennesket, den første som var her. Det var ingen sti før ham. Siden fulgte et og annet dyr de svake spor over moer og myrer og gjorde dem tydeligere, og siden igjen begynte en og annen lapp å snuse stien opp og gå den når han skulle fra fjell til fjell og se til sin ren. Slik ble stien til gjennom den store almenning som ingen eiet, det herreløse land.Mannen kommer gående mot nord. Han baerer en sekk, den første sekk, den inneholder niste og noen redskaper. Mannen er sterk og grov, han har rødt jernskjegg og små arr i ansiktet og på hendene -disse sårtomter, har han fått dem i arbeide eller i strid? Han er kanskje kommet fra straff og vil skjule seg, han er kanskje filosof og søker fred, men iallfall så kommer han der, et menneske midt i denne uhyre ensomhet. Han går og går, det er stilt for fugler og dyr omkring han, stundom taler han et eller annet ord med seg selv: Åja herregud! sier han. Når han kommer over myrene og til vennlige steder med en åpen slette i skogen setter han sekken ned og begynner å vandre omkring og undersøke forholdene, efter en stund kommer han tilbake, tar sekken på ryggen og går igjen. (Hamsun 2008, 7) Dreiningen fra det allmenne til det spesifikke, fra Mennesket til én bestemt mann, sier noe om det portrettet resten av romanen gir av den som har gått opp stien -det er Isak Sellanrå det handler om, men også en tidløs type: nybyggeren og jordbrukeren. Det store perspektivet blir tydeligere i slutten av romanen der portrettet -og historien -avrundes i et nihundreårs landnåms-perspektiv. Isak er blitt bonde, og ødemarken er forvandlet til en bygd med flere gårder:Der går Isak og sår, intet annet enn en kvernkall av skikkelse, en kubbe. Han går i hjemmevirkede klaer, ullen er av hans egne sauer, støvlene av hans egne kalver og kyr. Han går religiøst barhodet mens han sår, øverst oppi hodet er han snau, men ellers skammelig hårrik, det står et hjul av hår og skjegg om hans hode.[…] Han er markbo i sinn og skinn og jordbruker uten nåde. En gjenoppstanden fra fortiden som peker fremtiden ut, en mann fra det første jordbruk, landnåmsmann, ni hundre år gammel og igjen dagens mann. (Hamsun 2008, 352)
