It is important to characterize the microorganisms involved in biodeterioration processes to understand their effects on cultural assets and to define an efficient strategy for protecting artworks, monuments, and buildings from microbiological recolonization. In this study, we analyzed the microbial communities dwelling on the verso (front) and recto (back) sides of a 17th century easel painting attributed to Carlo Bononi, an Italian artist of the first Baroque period. Cultivable bacteria and fungi colonizing the painting were isolated and identified in order to characterize the microbial community possibly involved in deteriorating the pictorial layer of the painting. The isolated bacterial strains belonged to the Staphylococcus and Bacillus genera. Furthermore, culture-dependent techniques and SEM/EDS analyses revealed the presence of filamentous fungi of the genera Aspergillus, Penicillium, Cladosporium, and Alternaria. The chemical compositions of pigments were consistent with typical 17th century paintings, and some of the identified pigments, namely red lac and red and yellow earths, could be exploited as nutrient sources by painting-associated microorganisms. The study also evaluated, in vitro, the potential decontaminating activity of a biocompound, containing spores of Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus pumilus, and Bacillus megaterium. The results indicated the ability of this biocompound to counteract the growth of contaminating microorganisms that are potentially dangerous to the painting, suggesting the potential use of these microorganisms to prevent biodeterioration of artworks.

Twenty-one subjects participated in a study of Biklen's and Crossley's hypothesis that persons with autism show unexpected literacy and improved communication ability through the process of facilitated communication (FC). Repeated measures of literacy were conducted at (a) a baseline test of communicative ability before FC; (b) a pretest with facilitation; and (c) a posttest with facilitation after 20 hours of training. At both the pretest and posttest, the facilitators were screened from hearing or seeing the questions or pictorial stimuli. Although some facilitators reported newfound communicative abilities during training sessions, no client showed unexpected literacy or communicative abilities when tested via the facilitator screening procedure, even after 20 hours of training. Separate analyses indicated that some facilitators influenced the communicative output of their clients.
This study characterizes the opacifiers and colouring agents used in the glazed bricks of Persepolis\ud
(mid-first millennium BC) and the Mannean site of Tepe Rabat in north-western Iran\ud
(eighth to seventh centuries BC). Various analytical studies show that lead antimonate and\ud
brizziite (NaSbO3) were used as the yellow and white opacifiers in the glazes of Persepolis\ud
and Tepe Rabat. Brizziite is shown to be incorporated in the white, green and turquoise glazes,\ud
and is also associated with lead antimonate and CaSb2O6 in some yellow and white opacifiers.\ud
The simultaneous formation of these opacifiers in one glaze might have been accidental. A\ud
possible connection between the Achaemenid glaze industry and the Mannean glaze production\ud
at Tepe Rabat is discussed
