This article examines how Spanish critics received For Whom the Bell Tolls in the 1950s. Although For Whom the Bell Tolls was an immediate success around the world, the same cannot be said for its reception in postwar Spain. The novel was not published in the country until 1968, but starting in the 1950s—when other works by Hemingway were first published in Spain—many critics commented on For Whom the Bell Tolls in their articles on the author, and their remarks paint a telling picture of the novel's diverse and problematic reception.
