Many studies have investigated the association between stroke and hip fracture risk, but the precise association was still unclear due to insufficient statistical power in single studies with relatively small sample size. Thus, we firstly conducted a meta-analysis of all published studies to precisely estimate the relationship of stroke with hip fracture risk. The strength for this relationship was weighed by pooled relative risks (RRs) with 95 % confidence intervals (95 % CIs) after adjustment for confounding variables. Stratified analyses by study design and ethnicity and sensitivity analysis were also performed. Two investigators independently performed a comprehensive literature search in databases of PubMed, Embase, and Wanfang for eligible articles. A Bayesian meta-analysis was also performed to get a more precise assessment of the relationship. Eleven relevant studies from 10 publications were finally included into our meta-analysis according to the inclusion criteria. Overall, stroke significantly and independently increased the risk of hip fracture (RR = 2.06, 95 % CI 1.68-2.52, P < 0.001). Bayesian meta-analysis showed that stroke was also associated with an over two-fold increased risk of hip fracture (RR = 2.11, 95 % CI 1.62-2.75). In stratified analysis, stroke could increase the risk of hip fracture in Caucasians (RR = 2.36, 95 % CI 1.83-3.05, P < 0.001). These data support the notion that stroke is an independent risk factor for hip fracture, and patients with stroke have a two-fold increased risk of hip fracture than those without stroke.

<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> Anemia is a common condition encountered in acute ischemic stroke, and only a few pieces of evidence has been produced suggesting its possible association with short-term mortality have been produced. The study sought to assess whether admission anemia status had any impact on short-term clinical outcome among oldest-old patients with acute ischemic stroke. <b><i>Materials and Methods:</i></b> A retrospective review of Electronic Medical Recording System was performed in 2 tertiary hospitals. Data, from the oldest-old patients aged &#x3e; = 80 years consecutively admitted with a diagnosis of acute ischemic stroke between January 1, 2015, and December 31, 2019, were analyzed. Admission hemoglobin was used as indicator for anemia and severity. Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were used to compare in-hospital mortality and length of in-hospital stay in different anemia statuses and normal hemoglobin patients. <b><i>Results:</i></b> A total of 705 acute ischemic stroke patients were admitted, and 572 were included in the final analysis. Of included patients, 240 of them were anemic and 332 nonanemic patients. A statistical difference between the 2 groups was found in in-hospital mortality (<i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.001). After adjustment for baseline characteristics, the odds ratio value of anemia for mortality were 3.91 (95% confidence intervals (CI) 1.60–9.61, <i>p</i> = 0.003) and 7.15 (95% CI: 1.46–34.90, <i>p</i> = 0.015) in moderate and severely anemic patients, respectively. Similarly, length of in-hospital stay was longer in anemic patients (21.64 ± 6.17 days) than in nonanemic patients (19.08 ± 5.48 days, <i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.001). <b><i>Conclusions:</i></b> Increased severity of anemia may be an independent risk factor for increased in-hospital mortality and longer length of stay in oldest-old patients with acute ischemic stroke.

The association between the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) 142285G > A polymorphism and the susceptibility to breast cancer is unclear. We conducted a meta-analysis of all published studies to estimate the association of EGFR 142285G > A polymorphism and breast cancer risk. Systematic computerized searching of the PubMed, Web of Science, and Wanfang databases was performed for relevant publications. Overall, there were three eligible case-control studies with 1,360 cases and 1,522 controls included into our study. The pooled ORs showed that the EGFR 142285G > A variant genotypes did not increase or decrease the risk of breast cancer under the following gene models: A vs. G, OR = 1.07, 95% CI 0.96-1.19, P OR = 0.240; AA vs. GG, OR = 1.14, 95% CI 0.91-1.42, P OR = 0.239; GA vs. GG, OR = 0.99, 95% CI 0.83-1.17, P OR = 0.892; GA + AA vs. GG, OR = 1.03, 95% CI 0.87-1.21, P OR = 0.727; AA vs. GG + GA, OR = 1.17, 95% CI 0.97-1.42, P OR = 0.096. The between-study heterogeneity was not significant among all studies. The current meta-analysis showed no evidence for significant association between EGFR 142285G > A polymorphism and breast cancer risk. Subsequent studies with large sample size are needed for further elucidation.
