Linda ElderIn Chapter Three, Richard Paul details a substantive concept of critical thinking. With this concept clearly in mind, we realize that substantive critical thinking should be the guiding force for all our educational efforts. We begin to see the pressing need for a staff development program that fosters critical thinking within and across the curriculum. Critical thinking, rightly understood, is not one of many possible "angles" for professional development. Rather, it should be the guiding force behind any and all professional development. This chapter outlines the key components of a professional development model based on critical thinking, and describes how one community college has tied critical thinking to the concept of the Learning College.
