Los biofertilizantes elaborados con base en bacterias simbióticas fijadoras de nitrógeno (BFN), se emplean en cultivos de interés para el país como las leguminosas, constituyéndose en una alternativa para mejorar el rendimiento de los cultivos, a través del suministro de nitrógeno. El nitrógeno es un elemento importante para el desarrollo de las plantas, sin embargo, en el suelo se encuentra en formas poco disponibles para ellas, por lo que recurren a mecanismos de fijación biológica a través de microorganismos. La inoculación de BFN ha sido utilizada como opción para reducir la fertilización química nitrogenada. Para la elaboración de inoculantes con base en estos microorganismos, es indispensable conocer características fenotípicas y genotípicas de las cepas y estabilidad del inoculante durante el almacenamiento a diferentes temperaturas, con el fin de asegurar la vida útil del producto, su calidad y eficiencia. En este trabajo, se describieron características de las cepas ICA L9 e ICA J96, utilizadas en inoculantes para arveja y soya. Se observó que son bacterias Gram negativas, acidificaron el medio de cultivo y asimilaron como fuentes de carbono los azúcares D-glucosa, L-arabinosa, D-manosa, D-manitol, L-arginina y D-maltosa. La cepa ICA L9 mostró una alta sensibilidad a Kanamicina, Estreptomicina, Nitrofurantoina, Cloranfenicol y Ampicilina| la cepa ICA J96 mostró una alta resistencia frente a Ampicilina, Nitrofurantoina y Cloranfenicol. La identificación genética por medio de la secuenciación del gen ARNr 16S y la especificidad por el hospedero, permitió tener un acercamiento de su identificación hasta nivel de género| encontrándose con el empleo de la metodología utilizada que la cepa ICA L9 presenta una alta similaridad con bacterias del género Rhizobium sp y la cepa ICA J96 con Sinorhizobium fredii, género que ha sido descrito como hábil de asociarse simbióticamente con plantas de soya. Al evaluar la estabilidad de los inoculantes almacenados a 4±2°C, 18±3°C y 28±2°C, se evidenció que la temperatura no afectó el número de rizobios después de 180 días de almacenamiento. El número de unidades formadoras de colonias por gramo fue superior a 108, valor que garantiza la calidad del inoculante.
