Para além da intensa desigualdade de renda no Brasil, o país ainda apresenta uma crítica discrepância entre as regiões. Diante desse cenário, o objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar como a desigualdade de renda e o nível de renda per capita se relacionaram na Região Nordeste, para os anos de 1991, 2000 a 2010, à luz das hipóteses de Kuznets e do N. Para isso, utilizou-se dados em painel com frequência anual para as 26 unidades de federação brasileiras e o Distrito Federal. Foram analisadas se as relações entre os indicadores de desigualdade e o crescimento econômico teriam o formato de um “U invertido” como defende a hipótese de Kuznets ou o formato próximo a um N. Foi empregada a renda em nível cúbico conforme defendem trabalhos mais modernos que contestam a teoria de Kuznets. Nas estimações para a Região Nordeste, os coeficientes associados ao polinômio de 3º grau da renda per capita são significativos e com os sinais previstos para consolidar a hipótese do N. Podendo-se inferir, então, que o crescimento em certo estágio até pode reduzir desigualdades sociais, mas essas tendem a aumentar novamente.
