Medien tragen mit ihren Bildern und Inszenierungen von Körpern entscheidend zur Konstruktion und Verbreitung von Schönheitsidealen und Körpernormen bei und dienen damit auch RezipientInnen zur Orientierung, wenn sie ihre Körper formen und optimieren. Attraktivität und Schönheit sind zeit-und kontextabhängig und daher veränderbar. Schönheitsideale und "ideale" und "schöne" Körper in Werbung, in sozialen Medien oder aber auch in Reality-Formaten im Fernsehen werden diskursiv hergestellt. Doch auch medial verbreitete Abweichungen von Schönheitsnormenwie etwa die Werbekampagne Dove oder neuere Staffeln von Germany's Next Topmodel verbleiben in einem neoliberalen, hegemonialen Gesellschaftsrahmen. Die Rezeption medialer Schönheitsimperative ist dabei keineswegs einheitlich, sondern lässt genügend Raum für kritische Distanz.
