PurposeMultiple energy extraction (MEE) is a technology that was recently introduced by Hitachi for its spot-scanning proton treatment system, which allows multiple energies to be delivered in a single synchrotron spill. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how much beam delivery time (BDT) can be reduced with MEE compared with single energy extraction (SEE), in which one energy is delivered per spill. Methods and MaterialsA recently developed model based on BDT measurements of our synchrotron's delivery performance was used to compute BDT. The total BDT for 2694 beam deliveries in a cohort of 79 patients treated at our institution was computed in both SEE and 9 MEE configurations to determine BDT reduction. The cohort BDT reduction was also calculated for hypothetical accelerators with increased deliverable charge and compared with the results of our current delivery system.ResultsA vendor-provided MEE configuration with 4 energy layers per spill reduced the total BDT on average by 35% (41 seconds) compared with SEE, with up to 65% BDT reduction for individual fields. Adding an MEE layer reduced the total BDT by <1% of SEE BDT. However, improving charge recapture efficiency increased BDT savings by up to 42% of SEE BDT.ConclusionsThe MEE delivery technique reduced the total BDT by 35%. Increasing the charge per spill and charge recapture efficiency is necessary to further reduce BDT and thereby take full advantage of our MEE system's potential to improve treatment delivery efficiency and operational throughput.
Thyroid nodularity following continuous low-dose radiation exposure in China was determined in 1,001 women aged 50-65 years who resided in areas of high background radiation (330 mR/yr) their entire lives, and in 1,005 comparison subjects exposed to normal levels of radiation (114 mR/yr). Cumulative doses to the thyroid were estimated to be of the order of 14 cGy and 5 cGy, respectively. Personal interviews and physical examinations were conducted, and measurements were made of serum thyroid hormone levels, urinary iodine concentrations, and chromosome aberrations in circulating lymphocytes. For all nodular disease, the prevalences in the high background and control areas were 9.5% and 9.3%, respectively. For single nodules, the prevalences were 7.4% in the high background area and 6.6% in the control area (prevalence ratio = 1.13; 95% confidence interval = 0.82-1.55). There were no differences found in serum levels of thyroid hormones. Women in the high background region, however, had significantly lower concentrations of urinary iodine and significantly higher frequencies of stable and unstable chromosome aberrations. Increased intake of allium vegetables such as garlic and onions was associated with a decreased risk of nodular disease, which seems consistent with experimental studies suggesting that allium compounds can inhibit tumor growth and proliferation. The prevalence of mild diffuse goiter was higher in the high background radiation region, perhaps related to a low dietary intake of iodine. These data suggest that continuous exposure to low-level radiation throughout life is unlikely to appreciably increase the risk of thyroid cancer. However, such exposure may cause chromosomal damage.
Photocathodes that provide high electron-spin polarization (ESP) and high quantum efficiency (QE) can significantly enhance the physics capabilities of electron accelerators. We report recordlevel QE from a high-polarization strained GaAs/GaAsP superlattice photocathode fabricated with a Distributed Bragg Reflector (DBR). The DBR photocathode technique enhances the absorption of incident laser light thereby enhancing QE, but as literature suggests, it is very challenging to optimize all of the parameters associated with the fabrication of complicated photocathode structures composed of many distinct layers. Past reports of DBR photocathodes describe high polarization but typically QE of only $1%, which is comparable to QE of high polarization photocathodes grown without a DBR structure. This work describes a strained GaAs/GaAsP superlattice DBR photocathode exhibiting a high polarization of 84% and significantly enhanced QE of 6.4%.
The function of the E3 ligase RNF38 is still unknown in gastric cancer. Here, we found that RNF38 is upregulated in gastric cancer, and it is associated with the overall survival of gastric cancer patients. Further studies showed that RNF38 interacts with the nonreceptor tyrosine phosphatase SH2-containing protein tyrosine phosphatase 1 (SHP-1) and induces the polyubiquitination of SHP-1, which leads to destabilization of SHP-1 and promotion of STAT3 signaling in gastric cancer cells. In addition, overexpression or knockdown of RNF38 induces or suppresses gastric cancer cell growth in vitro, respectively, and silencing RNF38 delays tumor growth in vivo. These findings demonstrate that RNF38 is functional in gastric cancer and promotes STAT3 signaling by destabilizing SHP-1; thus, RNF38 could be a novel target for gastric cancer therapy.
As a part of the China-Japan cooperative research on natural radiation epidemiology, we have carried out a dose-assessment study to evaluate the external exposure to natural radiation in the high background radiation areas (HBRA) of Yangjiang in Guangdong province and in the control areas (CA) of Enping prefecture since 1991. Because of the difficulties in measuring the individual doses of all inhabitants directly by personal dosimeters, an indirect method was applied in which the exposed individual doses were estimated from the environmental radiation doses measured by survey meters and the occupancy factors of each hamlet. We analyzed the dose in the hamlets and the variation in the occupancy factors to obtain the parameters of dose estimation on the inhabitants in selected hamlets; Madi and several hamlets of different dose levels in HBRA and Hampizai hamlet in CA. With these parameters, we estimated individual dose rates and compared them with those obtained from direct measurement using dosimeters carried by selected individuals. The results obtained are as follows. 1) The environmental radiation doses are influenced by the natural radioactive nuclide concentrations in building materials, the age of the building and the arrangement of the houses in a hamlet. There existed a fairly large and heterogeneous distribution of indoor and outdoor environmental radiations. The indoor radiation doses were due to exposure from the natural radioactive nuclides in the building materials and were about two times as large as the outdoor radiation doses. The difference between indoor and outdoor doses was not observed in CA. 2) The occupancy factor was influenced by the age of individuals and by the season of the year. The occupancy factor was higher for infants and aged individuals than for other age groups. This lead to higher dose rates of exposure to those age groups. 3) A good correlation was observed between the dose assessed indirectly and that measured directly and the correlation factor was 0.97.
Bulk GaAs samples with different surface cleave planes were implanted with 100 and 10 000 V hydrogen ions inside an ultrahigh vacuum test apparatus to simulate ion back-bombardment of the photocathode inside a DC high voltage photogun. The photocathode yield, or quantum efficiency, could easily be recovered following implantation with 100 V hydrogen ions but not for 10 000 V ions. Moreover, the implantation damage with 10 000 V hydrogen ions was more pronounced for GaAs photocathode samples with (100) and (111A) cleave planes, compared to the photocathode with (110) cleave plane. This result is consistent with enhanced ion channeling for the (110) cleave plane compared to the other cleave planes, with ions penetrating deeper into the photocathode material beyond the absorption depth of the laser light and beyond the region of the photocathode where the photoemitted electrons originate.
