Registro no clinicaltrials.gov -NCT00740428Abstract PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness of an illustrated home exercise guide targeting the pelvic floor muscles in promoting urinary continence during pregnancy. METHODS: A randomized clinical trial was performed with 87 participants, evaluated six times during pregnancy and divided into three groups: Gsup, supervised; Gobs, not supervised, and Gref, women who did not perform the home exercises program. A miction diary and perineometry were used to evaluate urinary incontinence (primary outcome) and pelvic floor muscle strength (secondary outcome), respectively. The Kruskal-Wallis test with post hoc Dunn's and chi-square and Z tests with Bonferroni correction were used for continuous variables and proportions, respectively, with the level of significance set at 5%. RESULTS: At the end of the study, 6.9% of pregnant women in the Gsup and Gobs had urinary incontinence, while 96.6% of Gref women were incontinent. Regarding pelvic floor muscle function, Gsup and Gobs had mean contractions of 10 and 8.9 cmH 2 O, respectively, while Gref had a value of 4.7 cmH 2 O. Both results were significant. CONCLUSION: An illustrated home exercise guide targeting the pelvic floor muscles is effective in promoting urinary continence during pregnancy, even without permanent supervision. clinicaltrials.gov Registry -NCT00740428
ANALYSIS OF HAMSTRING MUSCLE SHORTENING IN YOUNG ADULTS FROM 18 TO 25 YEARS OLDABSTRACT Introduction: The hamstring muscles are exposed to shortening because the sedentary lifestyle of some people the over time that individuals spend sitting. Objective: To determine the incidence of hamstring muscle shortening in young adults from 18 to 25 years old. Methods: Cross-sectional study with 103 participants who were evaluated by goniometry. The participants were positioned in supine, lower limb tested with hip positioned in 90° of flexion, was performed slowly and passive knee extension by the evaluator until such time that the individual referred discomfort in the hamstring, so as to check the popliteal angle. Results: After evaluation 80.9% of the participants had showed shortened hamstrings, of those 79.5% women and 20.5% men. Conclusion: We conclude that a large percentage of young adults evaluated had shortened hamstrings, there is need for guidance for these young adults to provide more muscle flexibility and quality of life.
Background: During pregnancy, a woman's body undergoes various physiological changes. Physical therapy provides to pregnant women a peaceful labor and provides the necessary emotional support and promote well-being and pain relief. Objective: To evaluate the effect of physical therapy performed during pregnancy for childbirth preparation and its correlation with the time of labor. Methods: For the study, was selected one pregnant woman, primiparous, between 20 and 35 years, normoglycemic and normotensive, which was evaluated for flexibility by the Wells' bench, and strength of the pelvic floor muscles through the bi-digital test. Then an exercise protocol was applied between the 18 th and 36 th gestational week. Results: When evaluated before childbirth, the flexibility was 31 (medium) and strength of pelvic floor muscles (SPFM) was degree 4, the participant was unable to do vaginal delivery because there were complications in the second stage and the realization of abdominal delivery was required. After delivery, the participant was re-evaluated, and flexibility was 36 (good) and the degree of SPFM 4. Conclusion:Could not verify how physical therapy can influence in the vaginal delivery and decreased pain. However, it is necessary that more studies be conducted in the field of physical therapy in obstetrics.
