The fires that occur in the Amazon are as damaging as the deforestation is. There is a need for further long-term studies on dynamics of tree communities in forests affected by fires. In the present study we evaluated the dynamics of tree species, before and after an accidental fire that occurred in 1997 in an experimental area of terra firme forest in the Floresta Nacional do Tapajós, in western Pará State, Brazil. Approximately 3500 trees with diameter measured at 1.30 m above ground (DBH) ≥ 5 cm were botanically identified and measured in 12 permanent plots of 0.25 ha (50 m x 50 m), in 1983, 1987, 1989, 1995, 2008 and 2012. Analyses of survival, mortality and recruitment of trees were performed. The results showed that although the fire has increased the mortality and recruitment rates after 15 years, the highest mortality occurred on trees with smaller diameters (DBH < 30 cm), so the fire did not affect the survival of large trees in the long term, explaining why the reduction in density of living trees has not greatly influenced the decrease in basal area in the burned forest.

The first one was not stratified and presented 20m x 100m of dimensions; otherwise the second one was stratified and presented 10m x 200m of configuration. Both sample plots were installed in an unexplored area of up land Dense Ombrophylous Forest located in the National Forest of Tapajós, Pará state, Brazil. A completely randomized design with four replicates was used for comparison of the two plots configuration. Four sampling units were randomized chosen and all individuals above 10 cm of DBH were measured as well as the spend time from the plots allocation until the end of all field activities were timed. The results showed that the best method for estimating the variables studied in terms of relative efficiency was not stratified plot layout. However, there was not a significant statistical difference between of the two configurations estimates. Due to the shorter time consumed by measurement and allocation procedures of plots, it can be considered that the stratified configuration had the best cost-benefit relationship.

Phytosociology and timber potential in the Southeast of the Tapajós National Forest, Pará state ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate the phytosociology and timber potential in the southeast of Flona Tapajós, state of Pará. The cluster sampling process was adopted with 36 primary units systematically distributed. These units were composed of four secondary units measuring 20 x 250 m. All trees with DBH ≥ 10 cm were measured, considering different size classes and subsamplings. The phytosociological parameters were calculated and the monetary valuation of the forest was carried out, following the normative instructions of Organs environmental agencies. The cubic meter of the log placed in the yard was valued considering the price of R$ 380.0 m3, with 60% being deducted from this value referring to operating costs, producing a net price of R$ 152.00 m3. The most important species was Pouteria cladantha, but Apuleia leiocarpa, Virola melinonii, Protium paraense, Alexa grandiflora and Manilkara huberi also stood out, mainly due to their tree stock, excellent use in the timber industry and good commercialization. The area presented 126 m3 ha-1 and 13.61 m2 ha-1, of which 54.8 and 41.8%, respectively, were above the minimum harvest diameter. The estimated net profit was R$ 4,047.27 ha-1, demonstrating that the area is suitable for timber forest management. Keywords: Amazon; forest valuation; timber forest management.
