Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases are the main cause of mortality worldwide, currently with less than optimum therapeutic options. Danhong injection (DHI) is a medicinal preparation based on two eminent Chinese herbal medicines, Salviae Miltiorrhizae (Dan Shen; family: Lamiaceae) and Flos Carthami (Hong Hua; family: Compositae/Asteraceae). DHI has been mainly used in the clinical therapy of cardiovascular (such as acute coronary syndrome and angina pectoris) and cerebrovascular diseases (such as stroke) in China for many years. The pharmacological properties of DHI include anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-coagulatory, hypolipidemic, anti-apoptotic, vasodilatory, and angiogenesis-promoting actions. DHI offers a safe and effective therapeutic agent against cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases by modulating multiple disease-relevant signaling pathways and molecular targets. Herein, we provide a comprehensive review of the phytochemistry, therapeutic effects, molecular mechanisms, and adverse reactions of DHI in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. We also highlight the latest pharmacological advances and therapeutic potential of this promising herb-derived cardiovascular drug preparation.
The determination of honey authenticity is of importance to ensure its quality and safety. There is an urgent need of effective methods to detect adulterated honey. A simple, rapid, and effective HPLC-DAD method was developed to detect honey adulteration by rice syrup, using a characteristic compound from rice syrup, which is presently difficult to detect by current analytical methods. The characteristic compound was identified as 2-acetylfuran-3-glucopyranoside (AFGP) by MS and NMR. Based on HPLC analyses, the average concentration of AFGP was 92 ± 60 mg/kg in rice syrup. However, AFGP was not detected in any of the natural honey samples, so it could be used as a marker for the detection of honey adulteration by rice syrup. The developed method enabled a rapid detection of honey samples adulterated with 10% rice syrup. Using the developed method, 16 out of 186 honey samples from some markets were found to be adulterated with rice syrup.
Degradable organic synaptic transistors
provide guidelines for
the realization of implantable neuroelectronic devices and “green”
brain-like systems. However, because of the scarcity of high-capacitance
and degradable dielectrics, it remains a formidable challenge for
devices to achieve the same sensitivity as biological synapses. Here,
ultrasensitive and degradable ultraflexible synaptic transistors based
on natural apple pectin dielectric have been designed. Relying on
the strong proton-gating ability caused by the high capacitance of
pectin, the operating voltage of single synaptic behavior is as low
as −20 mV, comparable to the biological synaptic action potential
level (∼100 mV), and exhibits an ultrahigh signal-to-noise
ratio of 4.7 and a sensitivity of 6.7 dB. The ultraflexible devices
maintain stable, ultrasensitive synaptic behavior on various curved
surfaces, even on the cross section of a dragonfly’s wing.
After the device completes its function, it can be naturally degraded
in water, effectively reducing environmental pollution. Therefore,
our work provides a powerful reference for the study of “green”
ultrasensitive neuromorphic systems and efficient electronic biological
interfaces.
The relation between autophagy and apoptosis has not been clearly elucidated. Here, we reported that apoptosis followed autophagy in insect Spodoptera litura cells (Sl) undergoing glucose starvation. Sl cells have been adapted to Leibovitz-15 medium supplemented with glucose (1.0 g/l) and 5% fetal bovine serum (FBS), used for mammalian cell cultures. If glucose (1 g/l) or glutamine (1.6 g/l) had not been supplemented in L-15 medium with 5% FBS, Sl cells began to form many vacuoles and these vacuoles gradually enlarged in the cytoplasm, which were autophagic vacuoles. However, these large vacuoles began to disappear gradually after 48 h of glucose starvation, accompanied with remarkable apoptosis without apoptotic bodies, which was demonstrated by DNA fragmentation and activation of caspase-3-like. During glucose starvation, Sl cell ATP concentrations gradually decreased. Interestingly, if the conditioned L-15 medium without glucose was replaced with fresh L-15 medium supplemented with glucose or glutamine after the cultures had been starved seriously for 48 h or longer, the formation of apoptotic bodies was initiated. These data suggested that the partial depletion of cell ATP triggered apoptosis following autophagy in glucose-starved Sl cells and the formation of apoptotic bodies required higher level of ATP than DNA fragmentation and activation of caspase-3-like activity. Additionally, the disappearance of autophagic vacuoles, negative staining of neutral red, green staining of acridine orange and diffusion of acid phosphatase activity in Sl cells at the late stage of starvation (over 48 h) suggested that the dysfunction of lysosome was more likely to involve in apoptosis. The facts that Actinomycin D-induced apoptosis was partially inhibited and cyclosporin A, blocking the opening of mitochondrial permeability transition (MPT) pores, inhibited partially apoptosis in glucose-starved Sl cells, suggested the pathway of glucose starvation-induced apoptosis seemed to be different from that induced by actinomycin D and the opening of MPT pores on mitochondria probably involved in apoptosis triggered by glucose starvation, respectively.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
